"VW readies Polo GTI

15/11/2004 08:04
VW is set to give its popular Polo more muscle and will launch a hot GTI version of the little hatchback sometime next year.

The VW Polo GTI will go on sale in the second half in 2005 and will be based on the face-lifted Polo which is due to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show.

Insiders say that the Polo GTI will feature a 1.8-litre turbo engine with a power output of 110 kW

This little hatch, which will apparently have a weight of 1 000 kg will sprint from 0-100km/h in about eight seconds. Top speed will be above 200 km/h.

The GTI model, which will be in two-door guise, will also look the part with sporty trim.

The face-lifted Polo will feature quite dramatic changes and will incorporate a new front design with single unit headlights. At the rear its styling will resemble that of the Golf 5.

There is no indication yet when the Polo GTI will hit local shores, but we expect it to go on sale in South Africa in the last quarter of 2005 or early 2006."

Perhaps they're going to make a proper effort this time around like they did with the MK5 Golf GTi? :P

There is another article in the same web about the facelifted polo an they say the GTi will have the 2.0 FSi engine with 110kW. Personally, I don't think they'll use the old 1.8T for the GTi. I think they will use a FSi like all the new VWs.
Some time ago someone suggested that they MAY use a 1.6 16v FSi Turbo engine. I think this should be the best engine for a "small" GTi.

Time will tell!! :D

Ohhh no, please say they aren't going to do what Seat did with the Ibiza Cupra R and make it 2/3 door only... grrrr, why can't I have a small car with 4/5 doors *and* a fast engine?! :(

Personally, I find 2/3-door cars are a put off when buying -- although I don't have that many passengers that often, I do like to be able to get to my back seat without messing around with the front seats, and on those few occasions when I do have that many passengers, it's a god-send for people not to have to play musical chairs! Strange as it may seem though, my main reason for wanting a 4/5 door is for the practicality of getting in and out of it when in car parks -- the shorter doors win every time, no matter how tight the space is!
