Timing belt noise?

a rather large screeching sound is coming from inside the plastic cover that houses the timing belt, Gareth (gt hatch) has changed the belt and water pump about 1k ago so i would have thought they wouldn't need changing...any ideas guys?

Its there at tickover (loud) and gets faster as you press the throttle.

Im fairly certain its the timing belt "bedding-in." We had a big discussion about this on the mk2 forum a couple of months back. GC and tahrey had the same problem. You could try slackening the tension a bit (which is what GC did) but imo its as it should be, tahrey said it takes a fair few miles to go away though. Its probably more like 2 or 3 hundred miles since I changed it rather than 1k (it was only about 2 or 3 weeks before i dropped the 1.4 in when I changed it all) You should have heard the noise the old belt and pump made! :P

I guess you got it running today then? :)

cheers gareth...

Yea started it boxing day and finished it (with the help of 2 squabbling brothers) yesterday.

Peter n Andy you were a big help...and entertaining at times :-D

If its just bedding in i'm less worried now as i was worried about it snapping it was that loud.

It wasn't very quick at first either, but after matts dad had realized we set the accelerator cable wrong i had full acceleration again and its pretty rapid now :-D

not meaning to step on any toes but is the belt tensioned correctly mine squeeled when the new belt was just slightly over tight

It is tensioned correctly. Its a black art though "can be turned through 90 degress half way between the cam and crank pulley" is the specified level of tightness. and the level of tightness that the belt is at does fit within this specification. Although like I said you could probably loosen it a bit just to see if the noise goes away.

must be good going from 45 to 75bhp! :D congrats on completeing the conversion so quickly. did you run into any problems with wiring?

the cam belt was slackened off slightly and the noise has all but gone now (only ever so slightly there when the engine is hot)

Young_Un seems the cable wasn't adjusted right for the gt TB as the pedal only moved an inch and i wasn't getting full revs. Minor thing though and its sorted now :-D
So bring on the GT for a rematch :P

Topped the tank up 2nite so i hope your petrol pipe work is sound yoof :-D

Targets obliterated so far include :- 1.6 mondeo *2 up full of shopping*....1.4 6n *2 up* 1.4 #corsa *1up* ( # sorry for the language)
1. summat 306 *1up* and he was very shocked to see a polo saloon 3 up sailing past him on the duel carriageway, he even went for another go a bit later on..i let him pass then sat on his bumper until i decided i had won :-D

If i haven't killed myself i will be at a show near you soon.

That 90° thing is something to be very wary of ;) Mine could be turned 90° when it was whining like crazy.. it can now still be turned 90°, just more easily :D Haynes really should make it clear that the belt should turn 90° comfortably, rather than with a bit of effort.

mine can now be turned 90o still but its a little easier..it does require a little effort from finger and thumb still though. (can't find the little o lol)

sweet! (and me not on the msn at the mo hehe)

after 1000 miles i'd be getting worried about the belt so good thing you loosened it a bit - i think mine needed a few hundred rather than a few thousdand, a month or so of doing a 12 mile round trip to the hotel on irregular days for work..
do miss that vacuum clearer whizz, great for scaring small kids and making sheetroen drivers think i had a turbo ;)

does this mean i can have your gearbox and induction kit now metz? :D
