How-to: Polo 6N/6N2: Sunglassesholder

Here's how to install a New Beetle/Golf/Bora sunglassesholder in your 6N (mark 4) Polo. This is about the simplest mod known to man. Works on the facelifted model too (6N2) , as well on the new Mk6 (9N).

1. Get the parts.

Partnumber 1J0 857 465 Y20 'Sunglassesholder'. Costs about 13 Euro's.

2. Remove the old (useless) handle that sits above your head, you know, the one your passengers would use to hang on for dear life. It's mounted with two screws that are hidden by some plastic covers, unclip the covers and unscrew.

3. Mount the new part, not using the screws you got with them.
Now please, do NOT use the screws that came with your shiny new sunglassesholder, as they may be too long and thus will pierce the roof. After fitting, you're done. Here's how it looks:

Thanks for the info!

(Moved from MK4 to DIY)

I have been thinking about this for a while, but would like to know whether they will fit Oakly Jacket Sunglasses in them, or just flat "Aviator" style?

BTW, I have the Oakly's not the Aviators... I'm not a pilot or a porn star! :(

Moving was a good idea, I managed to overlook the DIY section, I just discovered it minutes ago. Idiot. Added disclaimer: These mods have only been tested on my car (the Mk4/6N) so they may or may not work on other models.

Oh well. It holds fairly decent sized sunglasses, and if they don't fit the lid won't shut all the way but it'll still hold them.

It's not that expensive so it may be worth trying.

Keep in mind that it requires some fiddling around to get it to fit exactly flush, but as the holes in the holder are oval-shaped you can move it around a bit to get it properly alligned to the roof. Hope that made sense.

The pics show the sunglassholder in a Mk5.

Yep, not very useful (i.e. won't make you go through bends faster) but upgrades the car nonetheless. Offtopic: Does the Mk5 have damped-handles to begin with? Mine just flip back quickly. :?:

yeah the handles are dampned so it all moces slow
no oaklys dont fit but the holder is sprung=, this traps the glasses in place
i have only one problem with this mod but its my own stupid fault; im 6'6" (2m) and very occasionally i will head but the holder cos i sit reasonably far foreward and up right because itsuits my driving style, i think this mod is damn good though and the head but is nothing to really bother me (thick sculled) :P

Can't wait... Shame it doesn't fit oakleys, maybe it will if I squash them in!!!

Allrightiethen. That will be the next (useless) mod for my '97 then, dampened handles. Thanks!
