My air filter situation...

Ok chaps, I need some help please. I need a new air filter for my car...(Mk4 1996 VW Polo)

Its only a 1.4, 8 valve so I know I'm not going to see any vast performance difference.

1. I'm not bothered about induction noise
2. I don't want the air filter to be purely cosmetic

I'm a bit of a newbie with regards to such matters. I've looked on this website >>> http://www.motor-world.co.uk/kroozin/ca ... _cat_id=21 I'm intending to get the hosing and piping etc from here, not sure about the actual filter itself though.

Some of the filters seem to be 'induction' ones and have a hole a their top...so I'm assuming I can't stick these ones directly onto my throttle body?!

Here are two diagrams I've been working on for different ideas what to do. Apologies for them, I had to do them in PowerPoint!



I'm told that putting the air filter directly on the throttle body can be done, but I'll get loads of induction noise. Plus this isn't the best as its likely to be quite warm at the top of the engine bay regardless of cool air coming through the two cold air feeds. However this is probably the cheapest and most simple solution...however would I get any performance gain?



In this example I've decided to place the cone filter away from the throttle body and resting down near the original air in take for the standard air polo (which comes from inside the wing). This would be quite compliacted to match up all the correct diameters of the stainless steel tubing, hosing and air feeds...and would also be more expensive.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of sticking the filter directly on or away from the throttle body!?

Am I going to see any performance gain at all? Currently I have a dodgy-fitted massive sponge-like Pipercross thing stuck directly to the throttle body.

Everyone I seem to ask - even people in the trade - seem to have different opinons on what to do and the performance gain I'll get.

you'll probably loose hp and gain some torque, minor amounts both ways.

my k&n wasnt that noisy mounted straight onto the throttle body, not until you where giving it loads of revs, then it made a mint sound.


yeah for sure theres lots of heat in your engine over the throttle body - i'm not sure how much less there would be a bit further forward.

i think swg make an induction kit that runs pipes and filter right down to the bottom of the bumper, so it sits as low down as it can, while still being behind the bumper.

make sure you put a heat shield in between the enjine block and the piping/ air filter as hot air isnt going to help! i have got a standard pankake filter and induction tubing, it works pretty well!!!

I'm going to have to buy a standard airbox (from dealership or 2nd hand) and was thinking of getting a replacement K+N 'panel filter' (£43).

I've decided that I need an induction kit. I'm really not sure what to get though. I was also thinking of a cold air induction kit from low down getting cold air.

Could any one help me on which ones are good and reccomend any for a 1.4 8v?

that looks smart what you've done to yours Andy, is that with the Engine cover off i presume?
and did you colour-cude the hoses and rocker cover yourself?

the gti block comes like that! thats why i didn't want to hide it with a cover!

ive just taken my k&n off my mine as i was gonna put a k&n panel in and drill it but ive heard good things about them there bmc cda filters.anybody else got good reports on these.could be an option for yours mate.there a nice lookin bit of kit...

So yeah, I was looking for a k&N filter eliment and could only find one of these.
Would one of these be easy to put install?

I really just want a K&N air filter element as I wouldnt need to change it at every service... I just need to clean it.
So would you say this is a good alternative?

Or does anyone know where I can get me a k&n airfilter element for the 1.4 8V?

Can anyone comment on the RamAir inductions kits at all ?

Mainly looking at getting one for the sound, rather then performance...it's a 1.3, for big performance gains you have to pay through the nose for..

ive just installed an HKS filter in my 1.4 8v similar to the way in ur example 1. in makes a nice rip rather than a drone and makes a slight difference in performance.

yes it will, although it won't be as loud as the 57i kits that k&n do
