Smelly aircon (9n)

Post by bcalvert »

My 2004 1.4TDi is giving off foul smells when the air conditioning is turned on. I've got climatronic climate control fitted, and over the past couple of days (since the hot, humid weather), whenever I turn the cool or heat on, it stinks! I think it must be some kind of mould growth in the filters from the humidity, but does anybody know how I can clean it without paying out at the stealers?

Any help would be great!

Cheers, Brian.

I'd take it to VW if its under warranty, let them worry about it...

Could be a dirty pollen filter, or leaves have gotten in somewhere.

As polosilver said get it to the dealer if it's under warranty.

There is an air conditioning cleaning product that you can buy, that you put in the car (in between the front seats) and then turn on the AC to max, pull the tab on the can, close the doors and retire for five minutes! It cleans out bacteria and/or mould in the A/C system and leaves it smelling clean and fresh again.

Only problem is that for the life of me I can't remember who makes it, but you have a good chance of finding it in Halfords or similar. It gets tested in Auto Express on a regular basis, they love it! Might be a Carplan product...

most of the time its bateria that grows in the ac because it isnt used. Just turn it on full belt and leave it for about 5 mins, apparently ur suppose to do this every month if you dont use it very often. :)
