Temperature gauge/sender...

Post by The G Man »

Have read the posting below - Co-incidentally mine has gone haywire yesterday. I was driving home when the red light started flashing, then the needle dropped right back to the 'home' position, then went back up again, red light started flashing again, pointer dropped and so and so on.

Got in the car this morning, turned key and red light no longer flashes before starting engine (and gauge is not registering warm engine) so I assume the sender thing is broken.

Have had a look in my Haynes manual which shows the sender unit location but I can't seem to find anything that looks like it on my G reg MK2 Squareback Polo.

The picture shows what looks like part of the electronic distributor with the sender thing next to it but I just can't see it. The exploded 'drawn' view doesn't help much either.

Can anyone give me a bit more of an idea as to where I'm looking? Cheers.

Find the distributor, look at the plastic block under it with coolant pipes going into it, find the electrical wires going into the block, they lead to a blue and a black sensor, it's the black one you want to replace.

Ahhh... The Haynes manual is totally wrong then!! I did see the two sets of electrical wires going into that area where the coolant pipes are but the manual just shows a sender with a metal clip on the top and one wire coming from it. Also, the picture shows the connector on the other side.

Will have a look tonight - cheers mate.

Haynes was written for the original polo engines, and only the key changes were noted in the supplement at the end of the book, so there are a few little discrepancies like that.
