86/86C Whats the difference?

Post by polock »

Im looking at getting a Gmax lowering kit for my Mk2 Polo. Trouble is there are 2 versions, one kit that lowers an 86 chassis by 40mm and another which lowers an 86/86C chassis by 70mm.

How can i tell which chassis i have, or doesnt it really matter as both kits will probably fit?

I have an '88 Polo C, 1.05 HZ engine.

Cheers, Brian :)

86 is a number
86c is a guy called steve :P

I'm pretty sure both those kits will fit either a mk2 or mk3

(86 = mk2)
(86c = mk2f or mk2 facelift or mk3)

either kit will fit your mk2

As far as i know, the Type 86 is a mk1 polo or Derby,
and the Type 86c is a mk2 polo or classic,
Think that's what they're known as in Germany/europe.
Have a look at,

Sounds like you have an 86c or mk2.
To be honest, any suspension from mk1/mk2/mk3 polo should fit, but in the case of mk1's, you have to change the top mounts for mk3 items (fronts only) to fit mk3 suspension.....dont know if it's the same for mk2's?
I have a gmax kit on my mk1, and ordered the mk3 stuff, 40mm.
Cheapest place is Venom motorsport, their own kit is actually made by gmax.

You only have to change the top mounts on early mk1's, late mk1's and mk2's have the same setup as the mk3 so it'll fit anyway. And yes, I think you're right that 86 is the mk1 and 86c is anything based on the mk2 frame, ie mk2 and mk3.
