Is it a common issue too?

Post by smokeGTI »

I just replaced/add the gear shift linkage bush /dust boot.
(those parts was gone without a trace)

Now it's more precise in gear shift, and seems lesser crunchy in
reverse gear, well just 2 out of ten times.

Before it had a large free pay at the gear stick
(about1-2"inch freely moves forward and backword),
and crunchy reverse quite often, now it's fixed.
And the parts are just cheap as hell,10 pounds only.

Was wondering is this a common thing for our GTI too?

Cheers.

Shame that I fail to take pictures during installation, but here something
you may check...

Check if there is too much free pay of gear stick(forward/backward
on nutaul)
usually not exceeding an inch. this is related to the lankage bush
being wear out.

I suspected that is one of the reason that we can't get reverse gear fully engage/sometimes.

I also found that the rocking stick is causes by rear engine mount,
it is connecting the gearbox and the lower chaiss of the car,
function is damping out the (forward/backward) virbration from the
gearbox.
Perhaps this mount is under damped, or wornout,I can't judge it
cause I don't know what it's like when new.

Thanks for the info

This is at the gearbox end right? all I can see is the clutch cable attaching to the metal piece that goes into the gearbox, cant find location of the bush you speak of?

Look more further down to the exhaust pipe, it's beside it.
but it's hard to get / see it from the top. Not simple to check
by your eyes.
You will need to get under the car, take off the plastic under pan.
then you will find those linkage I mentioned.
You will see a white plastic rod with ball joint in both sides.
And there's a metal square cup under it.
the bush is inside this cup.

There's is a faster way to check it, put you gear in neutral,
take off the shift boot, check if the linkage rod moves as you
rock it forward and backward gently within the free pay.

If it moves more than an 8mm(measure from the linkage rod side),
it's probably starting to wear.

Mine's moves within 3-5mm, after a new bush installed.

I beleived that there migh has another bushes around the linkage,
causing unwanted free pay.
