Well...

I run it on a PDA, so had been using version 3 before upgrading to version 5. Verison 5 on a PDA is exactly the same as the software you get with the stand-alone "Go" units.

I think that if you've never experienced what version 3 had to offer, you would be very pleased with version 5. But - and it's a big but - version 5 lacks many, many useful features that version 3 had (logging your gps coordinates so you can analyise your speeds and locations at home in excel being the main one that I miss).

If you want more opinions, have a look at the forums in pocketgpsworld.co.uk - here you will find lots of people unhappy with the downgrade from version 3 to version 5. However, if you look at the forums on mytomtomgo.com, you'll find lots of people hugely happy with their Go units. I think this is because they've never experienced what 3 had to offer beforehand.

It's very much a case of you pays your money and takes your chances, but I do still think that it's the the best thing for the money on the market atm. Personally, I'm going to go back to version 3. Although the maps are bit older and the screen updates much slower, I want to get the fuller feature set back.

The huge plus for Version 5 / Go units, however, is the ability to have the maps update with the latest traffic information (downloaded from your GPRS mobile phone via bluetooth as you drive) and to have the unit steer you around any trouble. This requires extra money for the subscription and a decent phone - I have neither, so I haven't tried it, but those that do use it seem to think it's the "killer feature" of tomtom.

Anyway, what ever you go for, make sure you download the latest speed camera database from pocketgpsworld.co.uk and set the thing to bleep at you when you're about to pass one -- this is the main reason I bought it.

I don't know if it will help, but this is my initial reaction to the version 3 software from a while back:

(Because version 5 lacks the logging feature of version 3, you can't capture your journey like this any more - and I really miss that, but I'm a bit of a geek).

Deek.
