Post by timmo »

can anyone tell me why all the frecking Glove Box covers fall off!

Anyone know of any tried and tested tips to help them stay on?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, there is meant to be a bit of a lip in the main bit of the glove box which goes over the pins in the door to hold them in, but these break and the door falls off. Temporary solution is to glue something over the pins in place of this lip, but it doesn't last long. Best thing to do is just to buy a new glovebox from a scrappy, which shouldn't cost you more than a fiver. It's held on with two screws in the front top corners and one screw into the bulkhead at the back which you have to do a bit of contortion to get to, but it's not too hard to remove.

 ..... well it is a bit of an out-there boxy 80s response to the loss of the beetle... they needed something quirky for the potheads and beatnicks to drive around in!

hehehe!

gloveboxes are just ornery like that. I don't think there are many cars where they're properly engineered. Even on the astra, the thing's falling off (the *one* bit of the car that doesn't seem properly screwed together) because half of the holding-it-on-stick in the hinge has gone beddy byes. Rattles like an arse below 2000 revs ah tell thee.

the one in the polo i could swear blind is hanging on by nothing save it's own metaphysical toenails.

Cured,

1.Drop whole box off.
2.You will see the problem is that the covers "lugs" are simply pulling through straight through the lug holes cut into the facia.
3.Insert 2 selftappers into the holes on the end of the lugs and tighten.
4.Fiddle cover with its "newly extended" lugs back through the holes.
5.Refit box
6.Admire handiwork.

No, haven't yet I'm afraid, not got round to doing anything to it at all.. I'll give the cerium oxide a shot first as it's a tad less pikey, but if I get fed up with it then I'll try your method ;)
