Engine transplants!

Post by Polo-03 »

Following talks on the polo 9n forum I was having a think about engine transplants. Just a few questions.

If having an engine swap what are the chances of something going wrong with the car? I know its like saying "how long is a peice of string" but do things go wrong all the time or is it basicly as a car would be from the factory, no real problems. I mean do you need to keep going back to the garage and stuff to have general stuff fixed etc??? Sorry for the stupid question.

I would say it depends on how the conversion is done. any mechanic will THINK they could drop a 1.8T into the engine bay for example, but then all the associated headache and fabrication will be an arse to sort out no doubt.

I must admit I thought about it myself as soon as i bought the polo GTI as I know they arent very receiptive to tuning. factoring in all the cost I work it out to be about the following:

1.8turbo golf GTI engine (AGU engine) - £1000ish
ECU and wiring loom with 200bhp ready mapped- £1000ish from QPE
labour £300 - £800 depending on how easy/hard the conversion would be.
misc parts/fabrication - £300- £600

so at top end i think £3.5K would be reasonable.

but then i stopped and thought for a moment. £.5K on engine conversion. or sell GTI for £5K, add that £3.5K and buy a nice 200bhp as standard car for £8.5K??? easy choice for me- standard car.

dont forget associated costs- your insurance would go through the roof!

£3.5K??? is that about the avarge price for a 1.8t conversion? I know JBS do them, they can also supply the engine, clocks, looms etc does anyone know what sort of price they want for supply and fitting?

alot depends on what work you can do yourself
i did nearly all of the work on my 9n 1.8t conversion, i paid a sparky about £300 to sort the wiring,
the wiring would have been easy with a emerald or haltec kit but i wanted to use the original TT wiring and ecu as i think thats the best way to go

buying a full salvage car is the best way to do it if you can
i had to make a mounting plate to bolt onto the 6 speed box and that is bolted on to a modified polo gearbox mount
the other mounts are standard vag items

Type Only VW in a search engine and check them out. They quoted £4,000 for transplant into a GTi, extra poundage gets you 290 bhp in a Polo!
