oil leak at head gasket ....fixed

Post by steveo3002 »

my 1300 had a small oil leak at the front corner, in the spring i decided to fix it

i got a new head set ,cleaned the surfaces well and torqued the bolts exactly as per the manual...well several weeks later it began to leak oil from the midle front of the head...quite badly infact

so i figured i must have sliped up somewhere, maybe damged the gasket...anyway i did another gasket job , again i was very carefull to clean everything very well....guess what it leaked just as bad

well i desperation i decided to go around the head bolts with a torque wrench and i nipped em a little more....the center 2 bolts which are first in the sequence were not as tight as the rest.

i cleaned it up and its fine now...i wonder if the tightening sequence isnt quite enough????

worth a try if yours is leaking badly

did you check that the head wasnt warped??
if you followed the sequence by the book (3 stages)
then all the bolts would be the same touqe

You know what?, after we did my headgasket mine did exactly the same, but we were planning on tightening the head bolts again anyway just to be safe and it did stop afterwards. So i think you do have to give them just that little bit more than usual.
