engine numbers, what's in them?

Post by Tahrey1043 »

should the engine code form part of the number?

i'm trying to work something out here

don't suppose a fellow 90/91 1-litre owner with their V5 to hand could reel off the first four characters of theirs for me could they? (dont need/want the whole thing)

mine starts AA02 --- so it hasn't got the AAU in there.

edit: just had a thought.......

dont suppose bits from a mid 90s ibiza would be of any use (they had a 1.05 option) on this engine, ya think?

could be a typo i suppose. :P yeah im not sure if the ibiza had the 1.05 engine, but if it did then its an AAU lump. They definately had AAV and ABD engines though.

so it IS supposed to be in there....? remind me where i might find the real one on the engine (it's somewhere on the block, right? or the vin plate?)

dunno i was just looking the lemon in the parts shop earlier standing there with me apparently non-standard piston in hand futiley trying to get his rings to fit lol annnd... breathe
would just be typical that mine might be some kind of experimental thing they knocked out on the cusp of the mk2s and mk3s with an "AA" (or AAO) code :D

hm interesting thanks *searches ebay for knackered ibizas* thats the problem with these cars, whenever one does turn up as being unfit to drive away, it's because someone's neglected the maintenance and the cambelt's let go or the head gasket has blown! can't find a one that's eaten thru with rust or has had a rear-ender, but has a good engine... ;) now the spanish jobs, they might be a bit more susceptible to time and prangs

Oh my oh my ..... I wonder what might be entailed in a diesel conversion?! :D Getting all the bits for £35 if no-one else bids.
(the above is a '91 1.7 ... and this is a '94 1.9... hey hey)

Another thought, if the ibiza shares the same engine, perhaps the piston rings are more readily available under the ibiza than under the polo...

Btw tahrey, if you try a diesel conversion and it works, let me know :D

that first one doesnt have a vag engine in, and the second one will be a big block and wont fit terribly easily. I think logik has an AAU engine for sale with about 90K on it. reecent headgasket change on it as well.

How long have you been doing all this now by the way? And do you think it will have been worth all this effort? You just needed new valve stem oil seals didnt you?

gareth: oh no dont be chucking names of yet more bits at me now!!! just when i think i only have ONE problem hehe
im only doing it as a hobby / exploration kind of thing. If I was working on a purely mathematical basis the car would have been just so many kilogrammes of scrap and spares ages ago ;)

if you must know, its in the order of about four or five months...

i know vag can supply the bits (even got the part numbers from martyn vagparts) but i wasnt plussed with the price

hmm, those may be the 'wrong' diesels, but surely they share mounts - or have adaptors ready in place - if the same chassis also had the vw 1.0, 1.3, etc in?
whole new 1.0 idea is starting to sound good - only issue is transportation and putting it in.

ps sorry tigz, but thems chassis numbers not engine ones ;)

Well the early ibiza has nothing to do with vag, its based on some sort of fiat (probably the strada) And they have "system porsche" engines :D (well not sure about the diesel except i bet its the same 1.7 unit you could get in the uno)

If the mk2 ibiza is anything like the mk2 golf (which i think it bares some resembalance to) it has a subframe that the smaller engine attaches to and the subframe attaches to the car, its either that or it has mounting points for both tall and short block engines (rather than tall block with short block mounts as you may have suggested)

I suppose this is just idle fantasy anyway. :D

or in a word: bugger ;)

not like i was probably up to the task of replacing the fuel tank, lines, exhaust etc anyway

tigz: hmm, interesting. The mounts are probably all wrong tho and i dont think i'd be offering you anywhere near what it's worth unless the car's quite old...
