next step... after slowing down and coming back to earth a bit... explain the problem again with as many details as seems sensible
i'd say first diagnostic thing would be go back and see if you can feel any difference to the clutch at all as thats what my instinct would be from what you've been saying. Not sure *what* with the clutch, but .... "something"
the sudden change in temprament, the stiffness and juddering on gearchange - is there a lot of gear noise as well when you change?
could be that something's let go, or somehow its got oil on it, which will be a garage trip unless you're handy with these things. doesn't sound like a regular slowly-wearing clutch as that's a more gradual thing - increasingly more slip and difficulty in engagement. unless of course its an artifact of having a self adjusting cable..
maybe the cable's almost gone and has made you a very lucky guy by giving you a warning as it frays a bit. easy and cheap to replace, so long as you're not arthritic at all. just make sure you're sitting outside halfords when you check, because if this is the case you dont really want the worry of driving on anywhere else with it liable to snap at any time and leave you stuck in gear.
hopefully its just the cable adjustment going wonky for some reason. you may very well be running on the somewhat notorious original self-adjusting mechanism cable (theres still quite a few about) in which case its best to get a manual anyway. If it is a manual maybe the locknuts came loose and you'll just have to spend an annoying and repetitive half hour screwing it back down to a sensible point that gives you a good bite point, easy changing and no slip, and locking the nuts up again.
then again it might well be something dodgy with the box (linkage, mounts, hmm)
anyway its far too late and ive gotta be up far too early
