Digit 1-6 is meaningless... Z is a blank space for further usage
Digit 7-9 means chasis code : 9N / 6N2 etc...
Digit 10 is the manufacturing year
Digit 11 is the factory
Digit 12 to 17 is the running no of car made in that year[/img]

My 10th digit is X which is 99 but was registered in 98
Have a 99 engine in it now so whether they knew I was going to do that or not.....

the manufacturing year of VW is from Sept to Aug, if your car is made on 2002 Sept, is it treated as a 2003 model.....

does anyone know why my VIN shows my mk4 1997 p plate 16v built in WOLFSBURG,GERMANY?
I've gone over it 4times now...and its definately V=1997 W=Wolfsburg
then running order of 106940.

nothing wrong at all...absolutely exstatic that it was built there...but thought all mk4's were built on a spanish production line alongside the seat's.
Now i can actually have wolfsburg harness pads, door pins and a tax disc holder for a good reason
