Diesel Power For Hot Ibiza
Spy shots in the current issue of Auto Express magazine prove that SEAT's hot new Ibiza Cupra R will be powered by a diesel engine - in what is a first for the Spanish firm's fast fleet.
Discreet TDI badging can clearly be seen on the prototype in the mag, on the right side of the hatch. Sources at SEAT say the newcomer, which goes on sale next spring, will be offered with the 150bhp 1.9-litre TDI engine - as found in the VW Golf and Bora - and will sprint from 0-60mph in less than seven seconds.
Our spy shots also show how the front end styling will differ, with a deep chin spoiler incorporating a mesh grille, behind which is the intercooler. Inside, leather sports seats and white dials will set the car apart. SEAT will also launch a petrol-powered Cupra R, with VW's time-honoured 180bhp 1.8-litre turbo engine under the bonnet. It will go on sale at the same time as the diesel, while an even hotter version, with up to 225bhp, is scheduled for later in 2004. Prices are expected to start at about £14,500 for the petrol car and £15,000 for the TDI.
Meanwhile, SEAT says its compact MPV, which takes its styling cues from the Salsa concept, will debut at September's Frankfurt Motor Show. Insiders claim the production car will be identical, and is set to be called Altea when it arrives next summer
