Cam Belt Query

Post by gwbjs »

Evening chaps. Just wanted to pick your brains about the work required for the cam belt change at 60K. I'm wanting to get it done even though the car has yet to hit 50K but VW have quoted me about £350, hence I'm putting it into the local garage. I checked the service receipt I got from VW which recommended that the belt be changed and I notice they have quoted for a 'timing belt kit' (about £100) as well as the belt itself. Does anyone know what this is and what needs to be done over and above getting the belt changed? Any help would be appreciated.

Despite offering the car for sale recently I have had a change of heart and will be keeping it. Went to look at just about every hatch out there and couldn't find one that came close to the GTi for looks and build quality.........I've decided that anything else would be a step down...

I would think it would be the tensioners as well in the kit as these are prone to failure.

Hope this helps.

It's 2 belts(a large and a small one). Pulleys and tensioner. I also bought a new water pump, as heard these can fail prematurely.

Mine is all getting done tomorrow.

Defo change the water pump at the same time as mine went at 55K ish and it seized up almost taking the timing belt with it. It cost me a little over £300 to get the VW garage to replace everything all the parts came to £150. This included a coolant and a oil change (just got the oil done as it was going in anyway and they didn't charge me any labour for it)

Cheers lads. The Gti is in today getting the Cam Belt changed but I suspect I will need to get the tensioners etc done as well. Is this something that a local garage should be able to do, or am I better putting it back in to VW?

Phew.....just off the phone with the garage doing the cam belt and they said that when they took the cover off, the belt was falling to pieces and part of it was lying in the bottom of the engine!!!! They don't know how it was driving at all. Anyway, they have ordered the full kit and have fitted it all up so looking forward to getting it back tonight.

Total charge of £213 for belt, tensioners etc plus new pads and a new CV boot. Only £250 cheaper than VW..............

Thanks for all your advice chaps.
