big engine
holla,
can u put a golf engine or larger v-dub engine in a polo? i cant b bothered tunin the 1.3gt engine its pointless when u could fit a big lump n have instant reliable power.
dont get me wrong i foopin love me polo it just needs a mill!

you can get a 1.4 into them, maybe even a 1.6 but anything larger just requires too much work (fabbing custom mounts etc) compared to working with what's already in there.
certainly a 1.8 and up in anything earlier than a mk4 is a job 'n' a half which is why hardly anyone's done it.
even the 1.0 ive just put together seems nearly too tall for the engine bay - the 1.8s (and 1.6s?) are taller still, which is the problem..
plus theres all the business with replacing the wiring loom connections, sorting out the gearbox, etc etc

The GT lump is very tunable unit imo, a lot less hassle than doing a conversion like a tall block engine.
You are talking big money and lots of hassle to get one in there.
For a fraction of the price you can have more power to weight ratio with the GT engine, compared to the standard 8v GTi tall block. It would also handle better.
The 1.4 and 1.6 small block engines from the newer polo's aren't as strong internally, which again would would put me off having one.

theres always the "1.4" (1341cc) GT conversions as well, though i cant remember how they're done...... bored, stroked, combination of the two, or just a replacement block... ???
1341 from 1272 isnt a great increase, but its something, and as hardhitter says its already quite tuneable. you can be knocking on towards triple figures with the right knowledge and work.
or was it 1431?

his runabout may only be 73 at the wheels...but you haven't seen his "project"calvino wrote:i dont mean to be rude mr hardhitter but ur the guru and urs is only 73bhp @ the wheels or so i read, guessin thats pretty well tuned as well? so on a price per bhp it aint really sensible to do it.
mildly modded gt's can easily make 100bhp atw, which its all good because the mk3 weighs sod all!
Some one on www.porka.net (is that down at mo I cant get it up on me screen?) has put a golf 1.4 in a polo. Think it was optima?
The last I heard was that it had more torque but little more power. Having said that it was'nt set up. But since the best thing about the polo is its weight it seems daft to put anything bigger in, so a G40 unit would be the one to go for (either new car or get your spanners out) thay can tuned easly I belive ( ????any one?????) 130 relible, a lot in a little car.
Thats my shout any way, if your interested my GT with a cone filter chip and optimax has 63BHP at the wheels, I am told it has a standard G40 exhanust on as well, from the cat back.
later bro's

how much does an untuned one get at the wheels, though?
ive only ever really seen crank figures / estimates... stock GT is supposed to get 75HP at crank, which isnt too sluggish in a lightweight frame.
if you really want performance, and will care to look after the Lader, then a G is your best bet. Designed for the car (factory blueprint mutation of a regular 1272 GT ... same displacement, different compression and power output), produces healthy and reliable 113 crank HP at not excessively high revs, and 150 Nm (about 110lbft) solidly midrange, from stock unit... and has quite silly tuning capabilities. Not sure if anyones managed 200 yet, but you can be sure some crazy german's having a pop... certainly 130-160 ive seen around a few times. (~150HP - from 1.3 litres! - in a 800-900kg frame is serious power-to-weight ratio time... 113 is already comfortably rapid)

My blue Gt got 74 bhp at the wheels a few years ago at a rolling road day. That was running rich at the time and in pretty standard tune.
The black Gt I have now, got 84 bhp at the flywheel and 90 lb/ft as bog standard on an engine with 140 k on it. This should be running around 100 bhp and similar torque once I have the cylinder head fitted and a few other mods.
