Polo 1.9 tdi tyre query

Six months ago I bought a 2002 (52 reg) VW Polo 1.9 tdi Sport. I've been very pleased with the car. It's now due for new front tyres and when I was phoning round for quotes a couple of places queried the size. My Polo has 'standard' 15" alloy wheels and has 195/55/R15 tyres... the tyre fitters I spoke to suggested these should be 195/50/R15. The spare tyre in my car looks new and unused and that is 195/55.

Does anyone know what size tyres should be fitted to my car as standard?

in the brochure its 195/55/15

however i have seen 50s being used too, it doesnt matter too much
my m8 used 195/50/15 because they were cheaper than the 55s

Thanks! I have a February '02 brochure that says 195/50 and that was adding to the confusion. There's no tyre info in the manual for my car and the fuel filler cover has been replaced so the sticker on that has gone.

I've been quoted a good price on some Michelin Primacy 195/55/15's so I think I'll go for those.
