I'm going to look at a GTI tmrw....fingers crossed its ok....I think I know what to look for having trawled the forums here (so thanks all you guys)....One thing...I asked the garrage bloke to check the log book (as stated in a previous post) for the 30ci code which shows recall for pedal box....he said he couldnt see it on it....would it not be in the service book instead?....and if it turns out that it hasnt had it done, can I take it to any VW dealer to have the work done, or does it have to be the dealer it was originally bought from?
Anyhow I'll let you all know how it pans out...and if anyone has any last minute advice or things to look for then let me know...cheers

I just got a warranty invoice print out when I had mine done, any VW dealer will be able to tell you if it's been done if you give them the reg. no. or the vin number, and any dealer will do the work if it hasn't been carried out already.

Finally.....after what seems like months of looking, I've finally nailed one down.
A Red (I'd given up all care in colour way before then...he he) W plate with 45k on the clock
I pick her up tonight....yay!
