How to get technical minded... Read in!

Right, I confess to knowing jack about cars technical wise. I could name decent parts and wheels, but when it comes to installing them, well i'm buggered.

But last night I did the following to my g/f's 106 (Oh so proud)

* Changed plugs, oil and filter
* Took off wheels and freed seized brake pistons (Which involved undoing millions of fiddly bits on the calipers
* Bandaged her rusty downpipe as it was making a racket

Now for most of you that's a quick job, but for me that's quite an acheivement.

End of pointless post.

Well it was mainly the brakes I was proud of... bandaging is simple.

I'm the same mate, usually if something goes wrong and it's not a simple (and I mean quite simple!) job, I tend to take it up to VW

So I was quite pleased that with the help of my sister's bloke (a former 6n owner and an engineer - he's technically-minded) I was able to get the driver's door stripped down and investigate the cause of a faulty 'leccy window

My old Mini was a simpler affair to work on with my Dad's help, but to be honest, I've owned the Polo for two years and have never yet had the need to jack her up and have a wheel off!!

Sooooon... the alloys need to come off and be cleaned inside and out...

hehe i'll get loads of practise in the next couple of months having my car sitting on the drive way. I've got a few mods to do so the practise will do me good

Did you have an old Mini?

What was it? Cooper?

I love the old mini's and I was gonna get one as my first car but then I found MK3 Polo GT's

Maybe we should set up some form of "idiots" forum, although I think I'd be in it all the time.

I was so happy when I changed my seat, and my head unit.

I think part of it is just being terrified of breaking something but once you've done it there are no probs doing it again.

Fair play to you guy who change your own suspension and things though, I'd never have the balls to do that.

Yeah the people that do their own sus and exhausts etc.. Hats off to ya!

All that took 2 1/2 hours last night, is that quite good or was I really slow?

LOL that's one reason I decided not to go for a Mini, i'm 6ft 2".

Nice car though mate, I always wanted to put some wide wheels and widen the arches... they look awesome

1 thing for the future to anyone thinking of doing jobs to their polo's..why not get your digi cam out and document the job..then make a D.I.Y guide for us to pop on the forum for all to use.

a job thats easy for one person may seem like a total nightmare to others..a step by step guide on the forum would be ideal.

(The guide should be in PDF format but i will accept guides in MS WORD format and convert them for you)

Had it been on my car I would have, but a 106 isn't very relevant and the technique is probably totally different!
