high mileage cars, what problems?
high mileage cars, what problems?
been looking around at 51reg polo gti's, alot of them have 50k plus mileage, my last car had only 28k and it was the same reg!!!
Are there any problems that I might come across for a car with such high mileage, what should I look out for?

The only thing to look for at 50k is to ask if the cambelt change has been made, sometimes it can go early (recommended by VW to change the cambelt at 60k). I bought my GTi two years ago on a W-plate with 51k miles and it hasn't been a problem... mostly
... but every car can have it's faults, thats why there is a 12-month warranty on used cars from the VW dealerships!

high mileage is sometimes looked down upon, but for no real reason.
a low mileage car can easily have more wear on it that a high mileage one.
I drive my polo up to Birmingham from High wycombe 3 days a week. that's 500 miles a week almost. but to get there it involves about 20 gearchanges as it's all motorway. If I drive 2 miles into High Wycombe it's more gearchanges that 80 miles to Brum! it also sits at 3000 rpm for the first 5 mins, then at 3500rpm for the rest. i only get in and out of the car 6 times a week - so there's no wear on the seats. As long as I change the oil often, it should be good for 200k miles.
I would challenge anyone to find a similar age polo with 6000 p.a. urban miles on it with less wear than mine (including engine wear).
The things that might get worn out are perhaps wheel bearings, shockers, cam belt, other belts, bulbs! and of course you might notice a bit more wear on the dash switchgear.
My mate up north has a 120k peugeot 306 gti-6 and it drives 10 times better than any others he has seen with 60k on them. it's noticeably tighter - it's a good example. of a high mileage motor.
as long as you can confirm the miles are motorway and not urban ones, then you shoyuld not be worried about the mileage - in fact, you could haggle the dealer down, and get a bargain.
