G40 project

Post by Barney »

Looking at all these fine specimins on this site has got me thinking. i would love to have a project car to do up and refurbish in my spare time , and i love the look of the coupes.

So i just wondered how much they usually cost , cos ive read posts of people buying them for 100quid. Between me and my dad we should have the knowledge and patience to do it. so i just thought i'd ask if anyone has seen or bought a G that would be suitable for a project, plus the longer it takes the better , (should be able to afford the insurance if it takes a year or 2.
Thanks for any help

Your looking at least 1200 for an example that needs lots of work doing to it.

It's sheer luck that gets them that cheap, buying off people who don't really know what they are or how rare they are.

Even broken ones are worth big cash. Freshly serviced G chargers are worth £700 if you're lucky enough to find one. Unserviced they'll still fetch upwards of £300. The gearbox is worth £200 at least, many go for more than that. Complete engines (with box and charger) go for £1000 if not more!

Then there's the interior, a mint set of G40 seats can be sold on for upwards of £200. G40 brakes are vented, so desirable to owners of other pre-94 Polos as a brake upgrade, these go for £50+. I've seen a rear badge sell on ebay for £37 and the front grille badge go for £25! Hence when a G gets damaged it's quite common that it'll either get broken up and sold for spares or sold on whole for a decent price.

So anyone picking them up cheaper than a grand is doing very well unless everything is FUBAR.

Recognised your username, good example of a G40 badge but I don't need it like you do!
