Front Wheels shuddering/Vibrating @ high speed.

Post by PhilGTi »

When im doing 90-120 ish there is a vibration/shuddering. Starts really mild at 90 then gets progressivly worse towards 120ish, ive not gone any faster since its started vibrating because i get skittish. It started when i had my new wheels fitted, what do i need doing? Wheel balancing? Tracking? Camber?

Also, wheels before hand where 5.5 wide, now 7" wide if that matters, same diameter and tyres tho.

Oh Polo GTi 2001 by the way...

Speed limits 70 mate :P

I tend to get this a fair bit, most noticeably on very smooth tarmac.

Checked your tyre pressures?

Have you checked that all the nuts are tightened correctly, or maybe check wheel bearings. They maybe on their way out.

Worth a try anyway.

Normally if the wheels judder at around 60-70mph its the balancing of the wheel thats out!! Sometimes it can be the toe which is if the wheels turned into each other!!

Maybe its what has been said before that you need to tighten up the wheel nuts!! Wouldn't have thought it would be the bearings because you normally hear the problem before you feel it plus you'd feel it at low speeds aswell as high speeds

Width of wheel had nothing to do with it!!

Well it is a bit dangerous to be doing 90-120 OFF ROAD! That might be the juddering effect right there

If you wheels are hard to get of and need quite a good kicking to do it. Get some copper grease (I think its called that) it stops the aluminium wheels sticking on due the difference in metals (according to the RAC guy who had to get my wheels off once  )

1)Balancing the wheels

2)A possibly distorted tire

I had the same prob and when i took it for balancing the guy said it didn't need any...I was the tire that was the problem.

In the first case you should be fine, in the second, you need a new tire
