WARNING: Sony Announces Recall of Certain AC Adaptors Sold

Post by inder »

for SLIMLINE PS2
London, 13 September 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced a voluntary recall of certain AC Adaptors supplied with the black slimline PlayStation®2.

Certain AC Adaptors, identified as manufactured between August 2004 and December 2004, and supplied with the black slimline PlayStation 2 models SCPH70002, 70003 and 70004 may overheat and cause an injury hazard to consumers. It is likely that some of these units may have been on sale after this date. No other PlayStation 2 units are affected.

As a precautionary measure, and to ensure the quality and safety of PlayStation products for consumers, SCEE has taken the decision to recall all affected AC Adaptors in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.

Consumers who identify their AC Adaptor from the diagram below as one of those affected, should arrange for a replacement by visiting:

http://www.ps2ac.com

Consumers can also arrange for a replacement by contacting the dedicated recall Helpline, the number for which can be found in the consumer alerts to be published in national newspapers commencing Wednesday 14th September.

A new AC Adaptor will be provided free of charge. Consumers should not take their AC Adaptor back to the place of purchase.

As a precautionary measure, and until a replacement is provided, SCEE advises consumers owning one of the AC Adaptors affected by this Notice to unplug the PlayStation 2 from the mains power supply and discontinue use until a replacement AC Adaptor is provided.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
A heads up, check your power supply! :)

Not the first time!

They recalled a load of T610 chargers for the same reason.

This is why I'll never buy Sony again. They're totally useless.

i do fancy getting a slimline ps2 (GT addict, but banned from my bro's machine), guess i'll be buying with care after that!

what is it with sony and their first run out of anything - its like they use the early adopter market as their beta testers instead of getting it right before going to market... you can chart it in so many areas...

the early minidiscs - sound quality was terrible, atrac only got serious development AFTER launch (if you ever get offered a non-LP/Net MD with anything less than ATRAC 2.5 on - AVOID)

lenses, lasers, and lens/laser transports in early Playstations, PS2s and MDLPs all had issues that required replacement or major repair. The playstation and PS2 troubles are especially infamous (the lens transport "track" being gradually gouged out because of poor design putting sharp metal and soft plastic together, until the whole thing jams; and one of the lasers simply burning out altogether as they used too cheap a mechanism in order to cut launch costs)

again to the MDs, the support and software for early LP, and particularly Net / Hi-MD was pretty rubbish, and a lot of it continues to be crap. It feels particularly with Hi-MD like they weren't particularly bothered about releasing the product but thought they'd cobble something together anyway for sh*ts and giggles.

they're great on ideas, and their consoles are pretty sweet, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of getting it right and putting some care and attention in they often fall down flat and rely on their brand logo/name and marketing to carry them instead of R&D.

funnily my Sony stereo in the car is quite good on all counts, if you discount the designed-by-a-sadist digital balance, fader and volume controls. Nowhere near enough levels. Hardly the output of a professional audiophile company, that...

and finally.... why oh why have they destroyed what was once their cleverest two ideas - putting dolby noise reduction on a walkman (arguably where you need it the most), and "proper" AVLS which put a professional limiter circuit onto the amp line, rather than just a bloody resistor?

i just hope their PCs are better ... i continually find myself wanting a small, widescreen vaio laptop. who knows what horrors can be squeezed into one?
