How often do you renew timing belt

Post by knfevg »

I have AEX 1997 Polo MK4.
According to Haynes I should renew the belt every 60,000 KM
According to VW service book (and the dealer) every 3 years or 120,000 KM.
What is the correct period?

i think the haynes shoudl say 60000 Miles rather than km. and i belive 120000km is 60,000 miles.

I changed mine at 60,000 but it appeapered to have been changed before by the previous owner so it maybe 40,000 but i thought it was 60,000 thats why i changed mine.

i tend to change the timing belt every 60000 miles, however if i buy a car and the belt age is unknown i just change it as a matter of course

sorted haynes reccommend 40,000 miles VW say 60,000 miles or every 2 what ever is first.

there is a note on page 1A3 of the haynes book that says something along the lines of.

this is what we reccommend if the car is used on short journeys. and it is better to also err on the side of caution as sever engine damage can be caused if it breaks..

so in summary both intervals are right.

VW 60,000 miles after all there the expert but manafactures are making service intervals further and futrher apart.

haynes 40,000 miles. correct once again but they say this to cover there arses if it does break before then.

and you have reminded me mine needs changin on my next INSP service.
