well ok, if no takers for that, at least an idea of whether just removing the left hand one would mean the gearbox can come out easy - i can't imagine the right hand one making that much of a nuisance of itself. it mates to the box far enough over that it's almost under the sump anyway, and the box has to go far enough left to allow the input shaft to clear the clutch...

because, i've managed to loosen up the left hand one nicely now, but the right hand one remains firmly fastened even though i've given it all kinds of helping hands that the left one didn't need (all i had to do was remember to jam the brakes on this time, and heave with all of 18 inches).

cheers :)

If you can spare a moment just to say a line or two on my ongoing puzzle - or even just a couple words to say whether its actually the easy way or the hard one - i'd well appreciate it.

Basically i just wanna know whether, if i actually manage to loosen the hubnuts, there's extra stress to be had in the following stages of driveshaft removal (things falling apart etc), or it really is as simple as haynes says. And whether there's anything getting in the way of removing the damn things in the first place.

Shall we say an extra fiver on my next charity contribution (last weekend's tips from the bar job, into the red cross for katrina and other disasters) in the name of whoever can spill the full beans? :D

You'll be about to do it with the right one only disconnected at the gearbox end, with a bit of fiddling about.
