cost of a Polo Gti? And insurance cost for one?

Post by onering »

What sort of prices should I be expecting to pay for a resonable spec Polo GTi?

I'm looking for one thats about 2-3 years old (obviously!), such as X/Y/01/51 reg, and preferably between 15-25,000 miles on the clock. I have looked in autotrader and the cardata website, and from private sellers I find some between 7,000 and 9,000 pounds. And from approved VW dealers they go from 9,000 to 11,000 pounds. Are these prices "correct", and how much would I expect to pay for one like this..? How much do you reckon I could haggle the prices down by?

Also, how much do you think insurance will be? I'm a 22yo male, No NCB, 2 years license, no penalty points or convictions, no insurance claims either. Do you guys have recommended insurers? The best quote I've gotten is about 1750 from direct line, nearly all the others quote me at stupidly large prices of over 3500....

thanks everyone!

I'll reply properly tomorrow (I'm about to go out...) but those prices seem fine...

Insurance will be your problem... Try Greenlight Insurance (that's who I'm with), they're really good.

Hello there, I've just recently bought a Polo GTi, I bought it from a dealers because I wanted the added reassurance that it had been looked after and serviced although I'm sure you will find many cars that are out there with full service history. Mine included full VW warranty and roadside assistance.

From what I hear it sounds like you have done your research, I think what you need to do now is decide how much you want to spend and not what other people think you should spend. When you have decided then have alook around all the vehicles you around your price range and you will get a better picture of what is good value and what isn't. I paid 9k for mine, a W reg with 25k on the clock, one lady driver, full history and in very good condition. I know of one member who picked up a bargain, lower mileage (around 19k I think), with leather interior for around a grand less...it's just a matter of being there at the right time and at the right place...get shopping if I were you...

As for insurance, I'm a little older than you (heh heh, just a little!), I have three points and have driven nearly nine years, no NCB yet I managed to get the insurance down to nine hundred and sixty whereas everywhere else was quoting me a grand and a half! Again, shop around...I'm with Norwich Union by the way. Good Luck and let us know how you get on...

thanks for the replies guys.

I tried all the major insurance companies like directline/elephant/etc and all the large mainstream ones.

Too bad its saturday afternoon now... I'm gonna try Brentacre, Green Light, and a few others that I hear are good for young drivers on monday.

Could anyone tell me if the standard fit alarm/immobiliser on Polo GTi's is thatcham cat. 1 approved?

also, could you help me identify the standard options on a GTi? Thanks. So far i THINK there's:

Alarm/Immobiliser
Elec. Windows
Heated Elec. Mirrors
6-CD Changer in the boot
Alloys (not sure which ones and what size though)
Xenon headlights
fog lights
ABS/EBD
PAS
Climate control air conditioning (though I'm not sure, one I have seen did not have CC)
Sports Seats
Sports suspension ??

Have I missed anything that should come as standard to all GTi's? Or included something that isn't a standard option? Problem is VW dont list polo GTI's on their website so I dont know what to use as a reference now...

Thanks again guys!

PS. I know the BHP is listed as 125, so whats the 0-60mph time?

Definitely sport suspension. Also,

Bigger brakes (25 mm thick IIRC)
Color coded everything
Fancy rings around the dials (right?)
leather GTI gearknob and other interior bits
leather steering wheel

Wheels are 6,5 x 15", two-piece made by BBS.

theese are the wheels:

the fancy clocks are because you get an external temp sensor which displays where the time is on the other models so they add a little analog clock above and between the tach and speedo

From what I have been told...from the salesperson who sold me my car, the alarm/immobiliser is Thatcham Cat 1...but when I went to get quotes from insurance companies they seemed not to enquire about this because I told them it was factory fitted/standard with car, I think they may be more interested if you got an aftermarket kit.

Also, take it with a pinch of salt, afterall the salesperson was trying to make the sale so it might not be Thatcham approved...but being a VW factory fit you would have thought it would be decent enough...

Also the 0-60mph time is between 8.3-8.7 seconds...I've not tried it yet...but I'm sure there will be an opportunity soon! (heh heh!)

Oh, also you get as standard, red painted brake calipers both front and rear...(and vented front disc brakes) does make the Polo stand out...

I pay about £650 per year... I'm 26, been driving since I was 18 (damn, is that 8 years??? :( ) No points (touches wood!) and 3 years NCB (again, touches wood!)

That's with Greenlight.

The alarm/imobiliser is Cat 2 IIRC.

I thought ALL GTi's came with Climatronic.

Not all have traction, and to be honest, I'd rather not have it... Just get some decent tyres!

As well as other things mentioned above, the GTi comes with 6 speakers, a nice shiny "piano black" piece over the instrument binnacle, clocks are chromed, discs all round (front discs are 256mm vented and the calipers are bigger than standard (they take MK3 Golf 1.9 TDi pads)), fabric or leather on door cards, recaro seats, drive-by-wire throttle, rear spoiler, deeper front chin spoiler, metal side skirts, lowered 10mm as standard, gas shocks, front and rear 22mm anti-roll bars, headlight washers, 6.5litre washer fluid bottle!, leather handbrake thingy with chrome button, remote central locking, electric heated mirrors, electic windows with one-touch up/down, bigger-bore exhaust, the list could go on!

It's an ace car!

:D

looks like there's no luck.

Tried Greenlight- won't insure me with No NCB, Brent Acre and Adrian Flux can't get any where near the direct line quote.

Only HIC left, and they haven't returned my call for a good few hours.

Sigh this may impede my attempts to get a GTI, since I can't really afford 1700 for insurance... any ideas?

Try Performance direct if you haven't already. They gave me a good deal, I'm a little older though, with full NCB!
