Metz... what have you done?!?!?

Post by Tahrey1043 »

Something you want to tell us, man? Got sick and tired of the saloon so quickly that you've de-kitted it and fobbed it off to the scrappers?

Image

The death of a pimp!

:D

OK OK actually, as some of you (spoilsports) might have guessed, thats from Looms. Took far longer to get there than estimated and i didn't have any tools so I didn't get anything (plus like a tool I forgot to ask them any of the important questions) but i saw some possibles...

A couple cars with five speed boxes, including the saloon and this rather shagged-out rusty squareback:
Image

Both of them being mk2s - would it be safe to assume the 1-litre and GT 5-speeders only arose on the mk3s, and these will both be genesis style boxes, or is there a chance of getting something less desirable (however, anything would be better than a knackered 4-speed)?

I can't see any reason why the saloon was being scrapped, I went all around it, everything (save for the gearknob, mirrors and drivers door) was still in place, intact and pristine, and the frame checked out all over. In fact if anyone's got a spare door and a saloon hankering i'd suggest they get down there and give it a look just-in-case. Otherwise it'll just end up being broken for bits and the frame tossed on the slagpile for later meltdown...
(that same metallic mint green colour, spotless inside, just has a rather nasty fabric colour but a couple of covers will sort that out)

On the other hand, would early VW-takeover Ibizas be any good as parts sources? They seem to be based off mk3, or at least early mk4 kit:
Image
There were a few of them about, and as I was standing there a recovery truck came by towing that particular white beauty.
(edit: maybe golf ones, too? though the only one i saw there which hadn't been reduced nearly to a bare frame was a GL, which i'm thinking = big engine and v-e-r-y long-range box)

Oh, and having mentioned horrible seat fabrics, there was an incredibly faded tornado red (4spd, and probably 1-litre) mk3 coupe with these absolute winners in:
Image

(God...) ... any interest? Looks pristine on the inside, it was in a bay marked "scrap cars only", I assume someone drove or towed it there and just dumped it with the V5 inside ;) Bet they won't want much for ugly seats :D :D

Jeesus, that place was huge. I haven't seen anything more than a third the size around birmingham. Maybe Taroni's would be, but I haven't yet found it (properly, i think i did once but wasnt obvious). Got a couple more questions for anyone who might know:

How much do you think they'd charge for an average box?
Know if they offer even a 48-hour guarantee on the servicability of stuff and/or have a record of what's in good order and what's shot on each car?
How quickly might I have to get back there to snaffle that saloon or bits off the squareback?
Think I could borrow tools etc off them to remove things, even if i can't rely on any help? It looks like getting my own, fairly clean one off in the comfort and safety of my own driveway might be a challenge, after all! (the driveshaft bolts are stiff, but coming off ok enough - the rest of it might not be so easy)

(those are the Qs I should have asked while i was there, but I saw what the time was and had to hustle off ... ok, head off back to notts, at all of 50mph)

Cheers ;)

Tahrey I literally live a stones throw (well about 150 yards) from Looms.

If you ever want any help getting stuff off, then give me a shout. I have a garage full of pretty much any tool you can think of, so if you need a hand let me know. I'm available at weekends, work full time during the week.

Prices there are good, £20 for an unleaded MG cylinder head (mini/metro), £20 for a HIF44 carb worth about £100....you get the idea.

metz: ha, rumbled, only one door was off!

spikey: youze mad innit :D
(nah, i think they're pretty funky, but i'd never dare use them myself, just too high a cheese value)

minis... you must be in a shack or something as i was surprised at how far it was from the road ;) i actually got lost finding it, on the ground the road isnt anything like the map i saw - has the a52 been re-engineered with new flyovers recently?
couldnt see the yard at all from the carriageway, or the island, just a good job you gave me the road name!

be careful what you say as i might take you up on that offer (you know what the weekend opening times are?) hehe... but i'm only about thursdays usually anyhow, its 100+ mile round trip otherwise (worth spending one saturday on that..?). heck, i don't even know how to get to derby from birmingham without involving notts or burton..

plus i havent a clue how much a metro head or carb would go for normally :)

lol, not quite a shack! Its on the opposite side of the roundabout from looms, you go past my street as you head back onto the A52.

They're open 8.30 till 4.30 on saturdays, and 8.30 till 1 on sundays I think.

Just let me know if you need a hand, I need to learn more about Polo's anyway, I think my gearbox is nearing the end of its natural life!

The best way to get to Derby is either M42/M1/A52, or A38/A52 (which is the way I go when I visit family and friends in Wolves).

Metro unleaded head in good nick worth about £150!

t!ts, my last lesson tends to finish at 5.15 and i already got a barrage of questioning (not from tutors, just fellow "pupils") over why i disappeared for lunchtime + one hour ;)

(not one of the regular non-attenders, so my lack of presence was conspicuous by being unusual ... unlike some who we've got used to turning up about a third of the time - the other two thirds split evenly between "pub" and "staying at home in bed". sods!)

be a weekend one then ... maybe not this time ... given how long its taken me to get the shafts undone (1pm to 4.15...) i'd need to start early and time-budget the whole day... no idea how long it's going to take to drop the box, neither.
and i guess still no guarantee that it would be any better than what i'm taking off! perhaps an idea to get both, if there's time, and sell the less desirable one on.

Would a mk2 golf steering column fit a mk3 polo?

goddamn that left driveshaft was an arse to get off. not painful or anything, just highly frustrating as i couldn't get the right clearance to remove it from the hub at all

literally i was going to give it up there and then, put it back together and f*** it off as being non-viable.

had a scrub at the bit of rust on the arch, worked out the anger, looked at it again .... had a three-limbed go at it (kicking the shaft up as far as possible by foot, tapping it out of the hub with extension bar and mallet) ... very nearly gave up again but it *just* *about* came free.

not 100% sure i want to repeat that on the wet, dirty, glass-covered ground of a scrapyard, even with a nice large thick patch of carpet underneath. hmm. and still not sure if i can get the right one out (or indeed if i need to). Tomorrow i will see if i can even drop the box out anyway, or whether i'm in too much danger of killing myself.

then make the decision - sod it / extract one from car at scrappy / get one ready-removed (proving a little troublesome!)

damn, they get through them quick then... its probably sitting on one of the teetering piles at the back now

either that or some enterprising dubber has offered them a couple of twenties for the whole car (more hopeful, and more likely??)

i might have that adaptor thing around, metz, as my new aerial came with a suitable dongle ready fitted. i think. bit hazy but i remember a problem along those lines.

just thinking back too, there was some lad in a red jumpsuit and his <?dad / uncle / mentor / tutor / abductor> wandering around looking for polo bits, possibly for a race car ... this be anyone we know?

* young = anyone born a day or more after me, or looking it ;)
