Removing Centre Console

Post by xplinth »

Hello Everyone,

First thing I want to do to my polo is fit an itx based computer in the centre console for mp3s SatNav and general geeky stuff like that.

My question for everyone, has anyone ever removed the centre console? Was it tricky (looks it) was there much room? and was it hard to put back together again? :?

Hi

I have recently removed mine, its a straight forward job!

1. Remove standard vw audio kit (with removal keys);

2. Remove cup holder and blank (access from din area);

3. Remove top tray or cubby box (pull up towards the back);

4. Remove plastic trim around temperature controls;

5. Remove buttons (if required);

6. You now have access to all the star screws, which are as follows:

a) 2 x top (cubby area)
b) 2 x centre (double din area)
c) 2 x behind cup holder (1)/blank(1)
d) 2 x bottom (behind the plastic trim - temp controls)

Hope this helps, its not as bad as you imagine!

Thanks to JillWilson, without her help none of this would be possible!

:wink:

I hate the rubberised coating they used on the centre console, it comes off really easily! So be careful!

:D

Brilliant. I already have the top cubby hole off, and the CC buttons are exposed. I have been on a gradual exploration trying to find how to do it.

As soon as my radio keys come from ebay, I'll get the radio out and centre off and post some pictures for anyone interested...

thanks again mfa-polo,

Your welcome Si,

TBH I would have still been scratching my head if, it wasn't for Jill Wilson (She's a little bit pro!).

Anyway good luck with the rest of your install, and pics would be good!

Haven't been on this board for quite a while, but I've just bought an iPod and want to fit a Dension ice-link into my Polo. I was just about to start searching this forum to see if anyone knew how to remove the centre console and I see this topic. Excellent stuff!

Si,
Please take and post some photos when you get around to it as I'm sure I'd find them helpful.

Has anyone fitted an ice-link into a 9n? I'm thinking of putting the docking cradle in the top cubby (with lid) so that it'll be hidden out of site. Just wondered if this is the best place for it? Will I be able to get the wire up to there or does the ventilation shaft get in the way?

Thats what it looks like.

The hole you take it out of looks like this;

And this is the detail of the what my friends and I like to call a 'falangie' that holds the cup holder in place. That was a bit of a git, I ended up using the car key to really force it in before the unit popped out.

Any other info anyone wants just ask....

Thanks for the pics, they'll come in very useful.
I'll hopefully be attempting it this weekend if my ice-link comes through by then.

Sorry Atlantis, I forgot to say that I think it would easy to fit a cable past the air blower into the bottom of a cubby box. You'll have to drill a hole in the bottom of the cubby box though? :?
