Brake problem

Hiya,
I've been having this problem for a while now, was hoping it would go away tbh
When the brakes are cold and i brake i get a high pitched tone and what sounds like a grinding noise from the rear brakes only, in particular the drivers side rear wheel, i'm not getting any noise from the fronts.
Like i say this is more prominant when they are cold, if they are warmed up it wont make the high pitched sound under normal braking, but the grinding will still be there.
I've got no warning lights showing.
The car is still under warranty although if i understand right the brakes are not covered (wear and tear) maybe someone can correct me !
In all honesty i dont want to take it to the stealers due to the fact that they appear to carry out warranty work when in all honesty the dont.
That is another story,or should i say book ! it's ongoing.
It's booked into a local fast fit center on wednesday,i'm hoping it's not going to be a shocker. fingers crossed.
Any help at all would be great.

Im guessing it's drum's at the rear on a 1.2?

Rear brakes are really really crappy on a Polo 9N. If you have discs you can see that the surface is almost totally covered with a little corrosion.

The pads get nearly no pressure to press on the discs.

If you would test the car on braketest-plates you would notice the lack of brakingpower of the rearbrakes.

I took my car for a spin with the handbrake a few clicks up. While driving I pulled a few times very strongly. After a while the rearbrakes get very hot and the surface gets cleaned. They work a bit better also.

Yeah, drums on the back.
If i pull the handbrake up 2 clicks and try and drive off the car doesn't move an inch.
I've been told the rear brakes on these 9n's a naturally noisy ! dont know if thats true.
I think i'll just put up with it for now.

I have brake pads all round, but a while ago I had a high pitch noise coming from the back of my car when I went round corners. Thinking it was something underneath the car, I took it to the dealers and they said my pads had actually jammed on. Believing it would be a difficult job to fix. I let them proceed. £70 down, I find out they only took the wheels off and put a lubricant on the pads... Could have done that myself and saved some pennies!

Got the same thing on mine. The cars under warranty and Colbournes of Guildford said they have lots of cars back regarding this. Seems to be another unwelcome `feature' of the car! Still booked in for more warranty (Rattling from the back of the car) work to be carried out so will let you know what they say on the 8/12.

having seen rear brake systems come and go as a motor mechanic for the last 40 years .rear disc brakes are junk ,you can not have a good handbrake with calipers on the rear,drums are much better,most of the bracking is done onthe front where discs are great because they can disipate the heat better than drums .dont buy a car with rear discs .vauxhall tried to get round it by incorperating a rear disc with a drum on the disc so you had rear brake shoes and rear brake pads . rear calipers seize on all models especially mk4 golfs. paul norbury.

Performance wise drums are better than discs.

However on braking efficiency, discs are better. hence the reason lorrys etc have a drum idea, where sports cars have discs.
