leaking rocker cover gasket?

Post by metz »

Not started my car for 10 days or so and i went to check it today and it started first turn of the key...wahey i thought and left it running...popped the bonnet 10-20mins later and noticed oil had leaked down the head from the rocker cover gasket.

Could this just be due to it being stood in the cold for a while? as the gasket is only a couple of thousand miles old and was fine before i left the car.

I know its only a couple of quid for a new one but i just wondered why it was leaking now.

Ah, they leak all the time. Mine leaks as and when it decides to. As long as it's not gushing out oil, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think it's these cheap GSF ones that make it worse.

You could remove the gasket and check it over for any splits or perishing, just to be sure. When you put it back, give it a good clean, along with the mating surfaces and smear a thin film of Hylomar around it. That usually stops them leaking for a bit.

it's the car's way of reminding you that it's a miniature rolls royce ... if it's not gently oozing lubricant from somewhere, then it's empty

maybe check the cover bolts are done up both tightly and evenly?

after a weekend of cold garage floors and trapped fingers its decided it doesnt like the new gearbox so maybe i should warm it up with some petrol and a match!

I'm gunna go join a skateboard forum..atleast they don't have IC engines...probably break my neck instead then lol.

Did you seal the gasket and do the rocker cover bolts up in the correct sequence?

We just put an AHD box on it and i actually scared myself on the test drive.

hmm, I wonder if a smear of high temp grease will help these problematic gaskets.
