Mk1 Madness

Post by Porky »

Hi everyone i'm new to this site but i've been viewing for a while.
I'm getting an insurance payout soon and i wanna go mad on a mk 1.
I'm thinkng of shoe horning a 2 litre 16 valver (9A engine) into it and running it on twin 40 webers. Has this been done before or indeed can it be done?
I have a good mechanical background and a good friend will be helping
All technical help and advice would be appreciated

Getting anything that big in a mk1 is very difficult because of the front suspension setup - particularly the ARB.

See this thread:

Most people use something with a smaller block, from other polos as a basis.

Shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a one off anti roll bar.
I just want to do something unique. i want to keep the car looking as standard as possible and then go out imprezza hunting[/quote]

hey, firstly welcome to the forum! 8)

sounds like you've got a good idea of what you wanna do! so thats a good start!

what you've got to remember is nearly anything is possible, it just depends how much time, effort and money you wanna pump into it!

one thing that would concern me is its such a light car, big engine with lots of grunt and front wheel drive! :?

anyway, i don't wanna hold you back! good luck with the build!

thanx for the vote of confidence. i've just been offered a 9a engine for 300 quid but cant afford it this side of christmas. Hope it doesn't go. I've sourced a gearbox (from a mk 3 golf 1.8 16v) and some drive shafts so hopefully i will get the project going in the new year and get some pics on the site
