The Polo Fun (shown here) is "an attractive lifestyle-oriented model which will make a clear statement in this segment", says VW, and is differentiated by its special grey bumpers, chrome roof rails and raised ground clearance - its suspension is 20mmm higher than the standard Polo hatch. To give it a sporty look, the Fun will have 17-inch alloy wheels with low-profile 215/40 ZR 17 tyres, sports seats and a specially designed interior, and it will come in a series of bright colours not offered elsewhere in the Polo range. It will be offered with four petrol engines delivering from 55bhp to 100bhp and two diesels, giving 75bhp or 100bhp. More details will be announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show."

Unlike Rover's disturbing 'urban-onroader?' -I love the look of this (although perhaps not in cat-sick yellow). The 'fun' tag (no doubt from the same kind of boffins that decided that calling a car 'streetwise' would make it sound cool) cheapens it somewhat I feel - I know they are pushing for the youth market, but I'm still just about the lean side of 30, and I am considering holding back my change of car to get one these.. de-badged in a sensible colour of course.. pipe&slippers optional

This weeks Autocar (26th Aug) says it goes on sale in the UK next March, starting at Â£10,500 - although I guess once you've plumped for a decent turbodiesel, those lovely 17" rims, something to play shiny round music as opposed to now-defunct cassettes and cold air rather than lukewarm you'll be well into 15k territory...

..Still - it's far cheaper than a Porsche Cayenne and no more likely to be seen off-road either..

Anyone seen what the interior looks like yet??

As for the Polo Sedan, I currently own an Octavia and it really does look like a squashed one from the rear three-quarter view. Maybe the new 2004 Octavia will feature four round lights on the front?

just looking at the rear three quarters shot ofthe yellow one - are the rear clusters different - is there chrome round the reversing lens - and the lens being darkened, rather than white??

Can't really see it properly.

That there'd be more differences on the inside, to be honest. All they seem to have done is change the leather and add white stitching to it - steering wheel, pedals and gearstick. Oh well.

It's just a Polo with raised suspension and roof bars ! A Polo sports utlity vehicle is the last thing anyone needs. Ranks alongside that stupid fiesta fusion/rover streetwise and the suzuki vitara. Just the latest stupid fashion fad IMHO. Seriously, what's the point in a so called urban on-roader! All raising the suspension does is ruin the cars handling and it's still only front wheel drive so it's crap off-road aswell!

Ah, i feel better for that. Sorry, It's just I hate to see VW putting out junk like this when they should be working on a new Polo GTi. I seem to be the only person that doesnt like it though so maybe it's just me

Interestingly - leonsmith has admitted to liking it and - gasp - I do too! I'm not going to say I'd go as far as buying one, but so long as you accept it for what it's worth, I don't have a problem with it.

It's selling a lifestyle to people who wish they still had the chance to live that life, but now realise they're getting a bit too stuck in their ways to really "live the dream". It wouldn't surprise me if most of it buyers were late twenties, early thirties people, perhaps just starting a family - for that market it makes a lot of sense.

So, my point is - I suspect that those people who like it will be a bit older than those who are after a GTI... *

But, I could be wrong - I've been wrong so many times...

And I, too, am still waiting for this GTi to turn up. I've been looking really closely at the franfurt pics on vortex (can you tell) and can't even spy aplace on their stand for a GTi to fit into. Maybe it's not going to happen this week

Hmmn, perhaps I went a bit too far. There's just something about SUV's that.......... !. Anyway,suffice to say i'm a bit miffed at seeing one where I was hoping to see a shiny new GTi. On a more positive note I've found some picks of the new Golf GTi concept car

Looks like it's shaping up pretty nicely. Got a 200 Bhp FSI Turbo engine and a new chassis. Should be pretty sweet

I've noticed the handbrake lever has white stitching on it, it might have the 'air' leather on it too (same material as the steering wheel)

Does anyone else feel a bit, well, trainspotter, looking at minor differences?

I like the car but would I buy one, after my current Polo, NO!

The white stitching, different stereo (did anyone else notice that), and bouncy suspension are not enough to warrant a change.

Why not buy a Subaru Forester - 4x4, boxer turbo charged engine, and a decent handler. You can pick one up second hand for the same price as a new Polo FUN I imagine.
