GTI - How to Replace the Indicator Switch??

Post by vr6south »

The indicator switch on my Polo GTI has a faulty contact when turning left. I remember a few years managing to fix the unit on my MK2 Golf. The unit looks similar and I thought I'd give it ago and try to fix it before forking out on a replacement. I have removed the steering column cowling but can't figure out where to go from here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated Also if anyone has any ideas how much a new switch would be.

I now have a Haynes Manual, but cannot figure out the technique for loosening the air bag retaing springs. The manual is sketchy and just says loosen the spring retaining clips from the rear of the steering wheel with a piece of wire or screw driver. After 20 minutes of trying different methods I've got absolutely nowhere :x HELP :!:

Fiddling with the air bag sounds a bit dodgy mate  Would it not be best to take it to VW?

ive had the airbag off my steerin wheel and it is a bit of a mission.

first unclip the yellow plug under the steerin wheel, then u have to get a flat headed screwdriver, turn the sterrin wheel so it sit 90 degrees from normal, put the screwdriver in the small hole at the back horizontal (-) then twist til its like (l) while twisting like so, pull at the top of the bit that comes off the wheel, once u feel it unclip from that side, do the same with the opposite side of the steerin wheel, once its unclipped at the top, it takes a wee bit force to pull it out, it will pull out at the top then come up the way.. if u know wot i mean? out at the top, then up! then u just disconnect the horn wires.

it is a bit daunting at first but once its off, lay it out the way with the vw badge facing up!

i shat a brick when i first did it! got sore fingers too from all the pulling! :(

hope this helps!

feel free to move this to the How To section anyone?
