Filling TDi at the pumps

Hi all,

I got a polo 9n TDi back in Feb 05 as my first ever car. It always takes me ages to fill it at the pumps - even on an near empty tank the pump keeps cutting out, this is at every petrol station I've been to. To fill it I have to be very gentle with the handle, and basically let the diesel trickle in. Generally takes me about 5-10 minutes to fill the thank.

Is this normal for a TDi, or should I get it looked into? I know its not normal for a petrol 9n because I've got one as a courtesy car while mines in the garage (pre-christmas accident in a car park ). With the courtesy car, I just put the hose in and hold down the handle and it pours out quickly without cutting out - which I presume is normal. Also notice on the petrol car, there are rubber flaps around the intake.

i have actually noticed that before. the pump often cuts out when i am filling up. the handle keep clicking as if it was full-not all the time though.

i usually jusr adjust how much of the nozel is in and the angle i hold it at. sometimes it doesnt work tho and i have given up on filling up. never thought about getting it looked at though as it doesnt happen all the time

It used to happen and now i just think i've got the nack of it.

Tend to push it in then turn it to the right slightly and it seems to pump the diesel in quicker.

Sometimes i think its the pump themselves actually. One Shell garage near J9 M1 clicks ever 30 seconds when i use it but at BP i dont get it clicking until it's full.

Admittedly not a Tdi, but with mine, I used to get that problem, and found that not sticking the nozzle so far in usually solved it.

As everyone else has said, I think it's to do with how the nozzle is is. The Movano pick-up we have at work is the same, you have to hold it in in a certain way or it keeps clicking.

I always have and still do assume it's the pump i'm using. I use various places to fill up and some pumps are just crap. Only really bad one i had when it constantly clicked was where i was making the pump etc stretch too far.

I think I've tried swivelling the nozzle around, and it does seem better if I dont plunge it all the way in (ooeer). But it still requires a delicate balancing act to keep it from clicking off.

Haha, yep thats me alright although this time it wasnt my fault. Someone ran into me in a crowded car park.

Im falling in love with the courtesy car - its a black three door polo I think its a 1.4 FSi. Its a lot smoother than my TDi, and quite noticably faster from standstill, but the TDi definately has the upper hand once the cars moving.

Sounds like a classic case of jiggling your nozzle around! Not just a diesel thing from my experience. Whilst we're on the subject of filling up with diesel, I must admit to wearing a plastic glove when filling up! Yes it's a really girly thing to do, but it really does stop smelly diesel getting on your hands

I do the same, diesel pumps always seem to to leak and be covered in diesel. I always wear them or if there's none i use paper towel around the handle.

Bloody ladies the only time I wear gloves is with the red diesel at work

I can handle being called a lady so not to have hands that stink of diesel. The smell takes ages to go away even after washing your hands loads.

Yeah, I must admit, diesel stinks, I don't mind the smell of Petrol though.

I totally agree with Dino, diesel is impossible to get off your hands...so plastic gloves it is lads!
