i think it's a great car, got a reliable engine, cheap parts, if you do an engine conversion then it turns into a great little street sleeper.
alot of the cars i see on the road are being run into the ground so maybe in a couple more years there will be less around and they'll become a bit more loved
It's basically that they aren't viewed as classic yet as they are a victim of their own success!
There are still a lot of mid 80s MK2s on the road, and those that get scrapped probably fail MoT on a petrol tank or something stupid.I've seen loads scrapped in recent years and can't find anything wrong with them! Because they are relatively common in terms of other 20 year old cars they don't get preserved like other cars of the same era would. Golfs would be the same, but they're normally made into GTi replicas.
As you say class wee cars that are unltra reliable and basically bulletproof. easy to see when you think about how many mid-late 80s Fiestas/Micras etc you see.
i have a mk2 squareback! shes a real bute! currently stored in a garage but as soon as my blue mk3 is sold, she'll be coming back out on the road as my daily driver! i have a few plans for her as well! currently have no pics but i can tell you shes a B reg 1043cc, white with a red wing! she has 80 odd thousand miles which isn't that bad for a car of that age! this was also my first car which i learnt to drive in and used for my first year!
same here. i used the same car for my first year of driving before i gave it to doug to learn in!
real nice car, starts first time even on cold mornings!!
I've a mate with 4 MK2 hatches at the mo, 3 of them were his own cars and he couldn't part with them so they're stored in a barn now, a 83,84 and 85!
I reckon the earlier ones were actually better too, far better rustproofing!

yeah you can say that again! i had to get a wing off one in the scrappy! we were hours digging out the bolts through all the wax! not a spot of rust!
