Thing is I don't drive pedal to the metal, so it must be the relatively short trips and copious amounts of town driving

Way I see it, if I'd bought a car to worry about the fuel consumption I'd have got a TDi.

Fact is it has that GTi badge for a reason, which means giving it some when reasonable. So my fuel consumption probably isn't great, but I've resigned myself to that fact

If you look inside the petrol flap on the GTi it states 98RON, which it asks for probably due to the relatively high compression ratio the GTi engine has.

Yeah, you can use either Normal Unleaded - 95RON or Super Unleaded - 98RON

Yeah you can use 95RON.

But there are some that might argue you're not maximising the GTi's engine performance by giving it lower octane fuel. And there are associated issues with engine pinging. But to be honest, how big the difference really is between 95 and 98 I couldn't say.
