Who hasn't had issues with their GTi??

After reads all the threads about problems (common or not) is there any GTi's out there that haven't had any problems!??

I'll seeing a couple over the weekend, one is on 58k and the other is on 43k

Depends how you define problems.

I've had a brake light switch fail on mine, but nothing major such as the cam belt tensioner has gone wrong so far (touch wood). The only other issue was by a VW technician failing to reconnect the climate control, but that was no fault of the vehicle.

I know people have had problems with their GTi's, but that didn't put me off buying one nor does it put me off driving mine like VW intended it to be.

Obviously I'm not saying ignore the fact owners have had issues with the GTi, but I wouldn't let it put me off purchasing one. All it means is make sure you look at a couple of cars if possible to compare them, and be alive to the issues that it might have had.

JUST READ YOUR COMMENTS, AND THOUGHT I'D TRY TO HELP... JUST A LITTLE BIT MIND YOU......

I'VE HAD MY GTI FOR JUST OVER A WEEK, AND SO FAR, TOUCH WOOD SEVERAL TIMES, I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED ANY PROBLEMS AS YET. MY CAR HAS HAD THE PEDAL BOX BRACKET RECALL, AND A NEW NS WINDOW MOTOR IN ITS 5 YRS OF EXISTENCE SO FAR. I'M HOPING IT WILL STAY THAT WAY....EVEN THOUGH I HAVE USED CAR WARRANTY.

HOWEVER, I GET WHAT YOU MEAN....WISH I'D READ THIS BEFORE I GOT IT. STILL, I WOULD STILL HAVE BROUGHT IT. IT'S A GREAT CAR AND I LOVE DRIVING IT!!! COMPARE TO MY OLD MK4 POLO 1.6, IT'S QUITRE ECONOMICAL. GOT ABOUT 300MILES FROM 3/4 OF A TANK.

TRY TO GET SOME CHECKS DONE. IT'S WORTH CONTACTING A VW GARAGE AND GIVING THEM THE REG'S SO THEY CAN CHECK THE HISTORY AND SEE WHATS BEEN DONE. THATS WHAT I DID.... AND A HPI CHECK.

soz off topic.. sexkitten, Is that pic of your car at the top of portland! I have a pic of my car up there. I reconnise the stones. Im going to weymouth for the weekend with my misses, weekend after next so ill keep a look out for ya!

The bottom line is that every car, regardless of manufacturer or model, will have its faults. The difference here is that we have use of UK-Polos.net to post up and whinge about our problems with other users and so build up a catalogue of the possible errors and faults that you can encounter during your tenure as owner of these fine little hatchbacks

Of course one of the advantages of this is that when you get a problem there are other owners on hand to provide advice and support on what the issue might be and how best to fix it! Two years down the line and I still love my Polo GTi, and wouldn't swap it for any other of it's competitors (ie. Pug 106/Saxo VTS/Fiesta Zetec S) that it had when it was on sale

It's definitely worth doing some background checks like Andrea did and get in touch with your local dealership of you have the numberplate details of your potential purchase to hand. Check that things like hte pedal box recall and cambelt work (dependent on mileage) have been done. Otherwise, just do your best to get the cleanest and lowest-mileage example you can within your budget!

They have their problems, but if they have been sorted you shouldn't have a great car in the making. Check: alloys for corrosion, clutch for smooth operation, pedal box recall, I would want the cam belt and tensioners replaced at those sort of mileages, check for any damp in the boot as well.

Wheels will more than likely have a bit or corrosion on, if you get it from a VW Dealer, try and push them to sort them out. They done one of mine.

Other than that, they're lovely cars, I too have had a brake light switch go (replaced under warranty), and I took out a fuse in the wipers (always de-frost your screen before trying them )

No other problems yet though, and it's been 4 months. As Redline says, I drive it as it's intended to be driven as well.

All in all get one that's been looked after and you'll love it

Si, do you just need your number plate details i.e. reg & date of registration, then phone any VW garage to find out about any recalls the car has had

Recalls should be in the service book. If not then afaik all you'll need to give them is your Reg Number mate

I can't see any details of recalls, but additional work has been done @ services 19500 miles, 2003 & 39700 miles, 2005. Could this be the recalls

I think mine is in the back of the book, I'll have a check tomorrow and let you know mate

Recalls will be placed in the boot (next to spare wheel) or engine bay! should be a little white sticker with date and service code!

Thanks for the replies peeps. I do really like Polo's and wanted a GTi for ages.

Hopefully I'll be a proper new owner come the weekend.
