Rusting! - surely not??

Post by simrich »

Was happily cleaning the motor over the weekend and came across some very bad rusting under the passenger side rear arch. Whats worse it seems to be spreading and spreading fast! It certainly wasnt there a couple of weeks ago! Had a quick check of the paintwork warranty and it basically says that for the first 3 years VW guarentee no paint defects and then the first 6 years, no throughrusting! Typical, the car is a little over 3 years! What do they mean by throughrusting?? Anybody?
The rust is just small speccles on the suraces at the moment but its creeping up onto the main rear panel of the body. Im gonna take it the dealer soon and see what they can do. Im hoping the warranty covers it, if not ill be kicking up a real fuss and complaining to customer services, at the end of the day no car this young (especially VW) should be rusting like this!

Anybody else had rust troubles on their GTi?

Sorry to hear about your motor...I've not had any problems with mine but I've not had it long...I did wash it at the weekend and it seems rust-free...it is worrying though considering the age and that's it a VW...

Any others out there with any probs?

Have you had the car from new? Any possibililty of it being a respray?

Throughrusting - I always thought that meant from the inside out, all the way through. But try at the dealer anyway, your car is way too young to rust. I mean, a Vauxhaul I can understand...

Mine rusts, but it's at least twice the age of your GTI... Plus, it doesn't rust on the rear panel. Perhaps a shoddy repair?

I think the mk5 has a zinc coated body and an anti-corrosion warranty of 12 years ?.
I'm surprised to hear of rust on a 3 year old car though.

My mk4 is 6 years old and that is rusting in several places but they weren't zinc coated.

My GTi had a rust spot come up on the drivers door at less than a year old! It also had a leaking body seam a few months ago too which let loads of water into the nsf footwell.

Heres the latest regarding my rear arch rust problem........took it one of my local dealers (with bodyshop facility) to get it inspected. The chap said that it looks like theres been some repair work done in the past on the rear quarter panel (the car wasnt involved in accident thank goodness!). This was confirmed when he did a check on the vehicles bodywork history, apparently when the panel was repaired, it wasnt done properly, hence i now have corrosion seeping through the panel joins. Anyway, i got the dealer to contact the dealership where i bought the car in order to arrange repair. The car is still under warranty and through a bit of complaining i got them to send an estimate for the work required. The car should be going in soon for a week or so to get it sorted out.
Courtesy car as well, GTi would be nice, dont think so some how though!

So... a repair after all. Hmm.

Good thing they accept responsibility.
