couple new bits
couple new bits
fitted my new GT/G40 steering wheel (cheers woodie) and coupe S dial surround (cheers quinny), i'd definetely recommend the steering wheel it's smaller and chunkier than the standard wheel, just feel nicer to drive with. my interior is slowly but surely taking shape...

hey thats funny I have a mk2 coupe S steering wheel in my mk3.
I prefer the feel of it to the mk3 wheel, which IMO feels a bit cheap and plasticy. Its also very slightly smaller than a mk3 GT/G40 steering wheel, which means more legroom and so on.
I much prefer the mk2 dash to the mk3 as well. Especially the derby one, which is 'love it or hate it' brown with matching brown leather steering wheel from a mk1 scirocco storm.

the pic is slightly out of date now, its now sporting a set of mk1 golf GTI MFA clocks.

cars idling a bit low eh?? or have you got a clock? I like the dash surround but think the mk2 coupe s wheel matches the dash beterMk2Adam wrote:fitted my new GT/G40 steering wheel (cheers woodie) and coupe S dial surround (cheers quinny), i'd definetely recommend the steering wheel it's smaller and chunkier than the standard wheel, just feel nicer to drive with. my interior is slowly but surely taking shape...

you can still fit a coupe S wheel on a late mk2, you just need to find one with the big centre spline. thats how ive got one on my mk3!
F G and H reg mk2 coupe S Ranger and Parade models all have them.
The MFA setup was pretty straight forward, but I had to add a golf-style handbrake and choke indicator in one of the switchblanks next to the clocks as those particular wires going into the MFA clocks were other functions. This was actually the trickest bit of the whole conversion as it took me bloody ages to find one (plenty of GTI ones about, but they dont have chokes!) I was lucky to find a mk1 golf formel E in a scrapyard that had the correct plug for it as well.
you have to change the indicator stalks to those from a mk1 golf with MFA. (straight swap)
you need to feed in a pipe from the engine so the clocks can measure vacuum (and work out MPG!) The speedo that comes with a clocks has a hall sender in, which is easily removed and placed in the original speedo.
The other functions on these clocks plug into a 6-pin plug in addition to the 14pin plug that is standard on all of this type of clocks. IIRC one pin isnt used and another is earth. The rest of the wires are
Oil temp -requires sender on the head
outside temp - requires sender to be put somewhere, Ive put mine next to the battery as it was easy to wire an earth up to there
Top gear switch (activates the mpg gauge) This needed a gearbox switch but 5-speed boxes dont have this capability so i earthed this connection, which means the mpg gauge is on all the time, which plays havok with the digital mpg readout (on a long run it gets to 99.9mpg
)
Change up switch (little light comes on on the mpg gauge to tell you to change gear. I left this not connected IIRC as again some gearbox trickery is required.
So its actually quite an envolved process!
I'll get a pic tomorrow as I dont think anyones seen it yet.

didn't know that although i'm happy i went for the GT one now, smaller than my standard one whereas the coupe s was the same size.Gareth_GT_Hatch wrote:you can still fit a coupe S wheel on a late mk2, you just need to find one with the big centre spline.
i'd be interested in seeing your new clock set-up gaz, sounds cool.

Coupe S wheel is smaller than a mk3 GT one mate, only by half a centimetre though.Mk2Adam wrote:didn't know that although i'm happy i went for the GT one now, smaller than my standard one whereas the coupe s was the same size.Gareth_GT_Hatch wrote:you can still fit a coupe S wheel on a late mk2, you just need to find one with the big centre spline.

As promised...

It was cold this morning!
Think I'll be doing that tomorrow!!! Was gonna do it ages ago and actually started then thought nah.....that's sad, but the fact VW actually did it makes me wanna!
Rev counter is cool.....I've just got a huge clock! You've the same steeringwheel as me though. I painetd the VW badge silver.......and the numbers etc on gearknob(again sad I know)

thats my winter steering wheel.
The brown leather rocco one will be going back on shortly. On GLs the clock surround, heater controls/ashtray and door handle surronds all have chrome trim round the edge, Its more obvious in my first pic than in the one with the MFA clocks. I fancied doing the chrome thing on the gearknob too, but Ive ended up with a leather 4+E one from a rocco
