I was driving around today and parked my car for about 2 hours. I came back to it and started it up as normal and it was fine. I then pulled off. Then about two seconds later it started to get really lumpy.
I got out the car park and the dash then started to flash the Engine Management light. It got more lumpy, and the car shivered alot. Outside the car doesnt sound to healthy and the exhaust is spitting.
I stopped it almost immediately and called the RAC. He connected his fault code reader and it showed 'third cylinder misfiring'. The RAC dude said he thinks its the coil pack. Any1 know whether this is serious? and would this be likely to be wrong?
the cars quite new only done about 27,000 miles.

I'm having the same problem.....it only misfires after a long heated journey and under 3,000rpm. After 3,000rpm its fine and its normally when i put my foot down but sometimes it'll jump if i'm driving normally.
VW said they couldn't find anything wrong with it but I suspect that the oil filler cap is leaking because there is a trail of oil going to the coilpack. the coilpack had a lot of oil in it too when i changed the sparks so i reckon its that.

it is a warrenty job and a common fault on the polo's
if you dont have a warrenty, i would argue the fact that the original coil packs were not up to scratch and they should replace them at vw's expense.
but with only 27k on the clock surely it is still under warrenty? if it was bought new after Feb 2003 you'l be covered

Cheers M7. My car is still under warranty, just. when i took it back last week to get it checked out, i mentioned the coilpack being covered in oil but they said to me that coil pack is definately working fine.
I might take it back and argue to get them all changed as well as the oil filler cap. thanks mate.

Mines sorted now. I went to VW early in the morning and although my warranty is not with them they said they will charge half an hours labour charge but then if they found it to be the coilpack, they will replace it free of charge.
However RAC refused to tow it there unless i paid them £150 for a 15mile tow. This was ridiculous, so had to tow it myself but this meant taking it to a local VW specialist garage. As i have warranty that is third party, i can nominate any garage to do it, and this was done for free. I got my car back within 2 hours working fine again
Only thing ive noticed is that the fanbelt is quite loud even with the hood closed. But iirc, the noise wasnt too loud before, Is this Normal?
BTW, M7 u have pm!

MODERATOR ! Should this or something similar be a STICKY ??
We have had this problem ,
Facts
Local dealer said:
"If its a coil problem we'll repair it FOC "
this meant putting it on the tester ( although I bet the techs could put their wages on it as it came in the door ) and id'ing the problem.
So they replaced all 3 coils FOC .
Our Polo was out of warranty but that was no prob .
Every 2002< POLO will have this prob
maybe they will sort this until 2007
