seriously.
after that, probably a 10mm spanner, at least for working on little polo bits (e.g. changing plugs/leads).
boot essentials also include a proper wheelbrace, extensible with an end tailored to your own bolt size (not any of that pansy "spider" BS), a good scissor jack, 5 litres of 95RON and a set of jump cables
plus, in no particular order:
* digital camera and some spare double-A's
* very warm clothes you don't mind getting covered in filth
* latex gloves, wet-wipes, fairy liquid, a reliable water heater and a scrap towel
* haynes book of lies
* funky funky LED-based miners head lamp thing. because i always needed a third hand (or my mouth) and a ready supply of batteries when using a regular torch
* a garage to put it in
* a foul mouth
* luck
* music. the louder and more metal the better, with an occasional synthpop or chillout interlude.
* debit card and an alternative means of transport to halfords/GSF
* internet (needs a second mention)
* own adrenaline-fuelled brute strength and determination
* tea. lots and lots of sweet, normal style british tea with a drop of milk. coca cola is an acceptable substitute but ONLY if it's The Brand Santa Drinks and NOT that "diet" or "caffiene free" nonsense.
* decent socket bar and range of sockets. even better a selection of bars - one 1/2" ratchet & some adaptors, and a couple of more solid non-ratcheting ones with different end sizes (3/4", 3/8", 1/4", whatever)
* torque wrench... cheap one'll do
* eighteen pound lump hammer for when it all gets too much
* adjustable wrench
* screwdriver with interchangable ends
* one of those little wheely trolley things that you can pull yourself around on your back with
* axle stands
* mole grip things
* time
