biggest probably a 1.8T or something similar, power wise G40 is the best option usually

In general: GT or G40, 1272 bored/stroked to 1341cc ("1.4 G")

Rear-wheel drive, mid engined two seater insanity: 1.8T from a Golf, though somebody somewhere had a project going with an ENORMOUS Audi V8 taking up pretty much the entire rear section of the car... dunno what happened to that. Probably couldn't find suitably strong suspension parts!

For an adventurous DIYer wanting a sleeper style car, you can apparently shoehorn a 1.4 16 valve under there - turboing etc optional from there on. Anything bigger, at least from VW, won't fit as the block's too tall to fit under the bonnet without the sump needing castors :D

the reason i was asking is my mate got a gti motor out of a mk1 golf, and i was wondering if i altered the drivers side engine mount would it fit?

the only thing i was wondering about was the exhaust manifold and down pipe being a bit close to the bulk head........ i work in a garage so i dont mind taking it on myself.

just a thought

Yeah it'd fit with a bit of work, which should be easy if you work in a garage.

1.8 GTi 16v be nice a little screamer! You may need to create a subframe for it though. I know that the dutch and german mk3's with them in all use subframes, whether this is just cos they get them easily from Salzmann or its cos they needs them is unsure.

or a 1.6 16v out of a polo or lupo on iTBs!!!! 8) 8) 8) this is what is going in my girlfriends stripped out mk2 polo coupe S :D 8)

i think it depends on what you want to use it for. if its just for going up a strip then basically the sky's the limit, but for practical use you don't want it too big as you'll end up with too much weight over the front making it handle like a dog. choose your application then your engine.

seems fairly reasonable though doesnt it? I mean, there is quite a few G40 6n Conversions so it must be relatively the same process?

As for the mk3, ive seen a couple of Vr6 ones before (well, not actually up close but hey!)

As far as cheap goes, to do the job properly in terms of fitting a G40, you'll pay as much as a GTI engine swap I reckon.

G40 and GTI engines tend to fetch around a grand if they've got a gearbox in the bargain.

With a G40, you'll be wanting a charger rebuild probably, maybe some other stuff too (fuel pumps for a start). It could cost a fair whack.

With a GTI, you'll pay as much for the engine and you'll need a garage to fit it unless you're brave. All the custom work will cost you. Plus it won't be as fast or as easily tunable as a G40.

More power on the cheap is rare to find. Decent power boosts cost money. Good engines cost money. Maintenance costs money.

I've seen more G40 engines knocking about than I have 1.6 16v ones.

The shells have had plenty of time to be written off and/or rot away, unlike the Polo and Lupo GTIs.
