New TDI Owner and wheel quandry...Solved! New Pics added!

I've just sold the valver and bought a 1.9TDI, so I thought I'd better introduce myself over here. My name's Andrew (Ninety to my friends) and I live in North Yorkshire. Which is a poor excuse for my car being filthy. Sorry.

Anyhow, you know how it is, you get a new car and everything's great, but you get the urge to modify...

I've picked up some 16s off an A3 1.8T (as you can see hastily stood against the back of my motor - I'm feeling rotten tonight and I really couldn't be bothered changing wheels) and I haven't quite decided whether I like them or not. They need a refurb and some right-size tyres, so I want to make my mind up before I shell out any hard-earned on them.

So I ask, good Polo people, can you use your imaginations, ignore the tractor tyres, ignore my half-arsed photo efforts (sorry again) and give me your thoughts on the wheels please?

I'll get some proper photos taken when it's clean and something's been done...

Anyway, main thing was to say hello, so hello!

Alright mate, welcome to the site.

Wheels shouldn't look too bad with some lower profile tyres on imo.

Thanks for the input, guys. I am liking the OEM idea, must admit. May also have the chance of some 16 BBS splits off a Golf IV, but I'm not sure what sort of state they're in yet...

i'm loving the pointing stick? Do you have a whacking one to accompany it?

I like em too... however the thought of the BBS splits has always appealed to me, if you can (want/is your style) get them refurbished (BBS's i'm talking about) polish the rims and have the centers anthracite

. This is however my own opinion and taste.

that was to hold the wheel up with - didn't seem to like standing on its own. I have a number of big sticks - they form a major part of my tool kit. The pointing stick is usually used to mark the spot that needs hitting with my big hammer!

Totally with you on the dark centre/polished rim thing Sidiba in terms of looks, but I've got nowhere to store winter wheels so I'll only have one set. The thought of those lovely sparkly polished bits getting covered in salt and muck on the way to work every day...Even cleaning once a week, I'm guessing they wouldn't stay shiny for long?

They look nice - get a set of decent tyres on them with a low profile and it'll look spot on!

UPDATE

So the powder coaters' idea of "gunmetal" differs significantly from mine, but they've got a nice finish on the centres...

Massive thanks go to bstardchild for his excellent DIY guide on refurbing split rims also - It was priceless.

Very nice, that's the sort of height I want my Polo.

That colour is a bit different, I think I would prefer black centres though.

Agreed. I'm trying to figure out whether it's "different" or just plain wrong. From some angles they look spot on, but from others I have my doubts...I'll give it a few weeks and see what I decide

I certainly had darker in mind. I may have to get them redone black, but I can't afford it at this very moment...
