Correct, its in the boot behind the First Aid Kit on the drivers side, usually one wiring plug and one blue pipe coming out of it.
When i went to VW, The VW service guy said best thing to do is smell the pump (no silly comments please about smelling your pumps)
if it smells burnt then its fooked, he said that it would probably smell abit like the hand controller from a Scalextric (sp?) this means the motor inside the pump has burnt out and the whole unit needs replacing (usually caused by getting wet at some point)
Part number (just incase anyone needs it) is 6N0 962 257 now depending on the age of the vehicle (this part number is for a Mk5 Polo 6N2 2000 - 2002) then the there may or may not be a letter at the end of the part number aswell, mine hasnt but apparently some have "A" at the end and possibly other letters !
I have managed to source one for £47 including VAT and delivery from a VW Breakers which isnt too bad (beats VW's price anyway)
