Movement of gearstick in-gear?

Post by Wardy »

I've noticed this just in 4th gear I think, if I come on and off the throttle, in traffic say, the gearstick seems to jump forward? Then it moves back when I come on the power again :?

Gear linkages perhaps? Is this expensive to sort out? And is anything being unduly damaged while this is occuring?

Thanks people.

OK, that's fine. Doesn't bother me unduly, if there's nothing wrong.

Tis a bit strange though! Wonder what the cause is?

I haven't noticed when engaging 4th, just when coming on and off the throttle. I can make it move about an inch if I come right off the throttle :P

i have the same thing wi my gti!
only ever in 4th gear do i feel the gearstick go back on forth, on and off throttle.
my girlfriend hates it doing that when she drives it but it doesnt really bother me at all!

in fact, because i know it does this i tend to cruise around at 30mph goin on and off throttle on purpose to feel the little movement of the gearstick. for some reason it makes me feel more calm on the road....

am i weird?

Seems quite a lot of people get this then, and put it down to a quirk of the car.

But there but be some explanation or other, as to why it happens? Never seen it in any other car!

Mine does this too. My mum's last golf (version before the latest one) did it too, I thought it was strange at the time, but then when I found out my polo does it too I didn't worry too much about it!

Would be interesting to find out what causes it tho.

my old reno clio used to do this in every gear and moved back an forth about 1"! lol

it didnt really bother me at all cos almost every other reno does it!
its just because of the movement of the engine under load, the engine tilts back slightly under load causing it to pull on the gear linkage, this is wot u feel in the gearstick!
