280mm setup

Post by Wardy »

Just wondering how many people have done the upgrade to 280mm discs and upgraded carriers on their GTi?

Trying to get a feel for price of parts, where people obtained stuff from etc - especially the carriers. I understand they can be obtained from VW G60 models, but also some Passats?

Got a price of £80 for a pair of the correct carriers, and £30 for a pair of 280mm discs. I understand the existing pads can be used? But I might change those at the same time, seeing as I'm doing the discs. Any recommendations for pads - Black Diamond?

Thanks guys :P

£30 for a pair of 280mm discs? That sounds incredibly cheap!

I have the setup on mine it is a big step up from the 256mm set up, you can use your exsisting pads no problem as the actual braking surface is the same size as the 256mm discs is just spaced out further from the hub which gives the greater braking force.

You can get the carriers off a G60 Golf, 4 stud Passats and early VR6 MK3 Golfs before they went 5 stud. I found them hard to find up in Scotland 2nd hand as its a very common mod on MK2 Golfs, I just got brand new ones from VAG parts for a little under £100 as you get fresh slider pins/seals which start to go on older carriers anyway.

£30 is a great price for 280mm discs there a little more than that each for new vag ones. I use pagid fast road pads with the 280mm vag discs this combination is regarded highly by Golf owners with the brake upgrade. They do work well braking hard from 100 I can be at a stand still before the speedo hits 0

Thanks people, will continue my search for a reasonably priced set of carriers. Sorry to mislead above, I was mistaken, it's £25 PER disc for a ATE standard 280mm, from Motorsport World. Still not bad though :P

What other cars can I get suitable carriers from? 1.8 non-turbo Passats apparently, what about 1.8 A3s? I think people tend to overprice if they've come from a G60 Golf/Corrado, as they're rarer models? And it seems to have become known as the G60 brake upgrade....
