New lupo with polo platform

Post by silverpolo »

VW's £5k Fox Trots In

f you thought VW had strayed from its humble roots, then think again... Recent models such as the Touareg and Phaeton may not seem in keeping with the 'People's Car' tag, but the German company's next major model is once again set to be a car that nearly everyone can afford.

With a price of around £5,000 for the entry-level version, the replacement for the Lupo will become the cheapest new car on sale in Britain, undercutting rivals such as the Perodua Kenari, Daewoo Matiz and Rover CityRover.

But just because it will have a budget price tag doesn't mean the VW will be cheaply finished or under-equipped. The newcomer will be built in Brazil, in a factory that makes the South America-only Gol and Parati models. And thanks to low labour costs and support from the government there, the plant will produce more than a million cars a year.

The new Lupo will be the first model to be developed and built from scratch at the plant. It's codenamed 'Tupi', and we have already seen prototypes being tested. However, these exclusive official pictures reveal the car that'll hit showrooms in summer 2005. The name has yet to be decided, but sources suggest that VW is considering Fox and Start.

Built on the Polo platform, the newcomer is 70mm shorter than the supermini, and 140mm longer than the cur-
rent Lupo. The Polo wheelbase creates a more spacious cabin than in the Lupo, while the wider track means the car will seat five adults. Meanwhile, the rear seat will split three ways and be mounted on runners, allowing the boot capacity to be increased from 200 to 240 litres.

Safety will be high on VW's agenda. European models will come with ESP and ABS as standard - even on entry-level cars - while all versions will get driver, passenger, curtain and seat airbags for maximum protection.

Engines will come from VW's current line-up, kicking off with a 1.2-litre 55bhp three-cylinder petrol unit. Next up will be a 75bhp 1.4-litre four-cylinder, while a 100bhp 1.6 will be offered, too, albeit with a four-speed auto box only.

Initially, only one diesel will be available. The all-alloy 1.4-litre three-cylinder is used in the current Lupo and Polo, and develops 75bhp. A 60bhp 1.2-litre oil-burner is also under development, alongside a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit, both of which will debut in 2006 and comply with the toughest European emissions legislation.

However, the Lupo replacement will sound the death knell for its sister car, the SEAT Arosa. At present, both models are built at VW's HQ in Wolfsburg, Germany. But as this factory gears up to produce the new Passat, the Arosa will be axed.

The city runabout does not reflect the sporty image VW wants to create for the Spanish maker. So instead, a new baby SEAT will arrive in 2006 using aluminium spaceframe technology gleaned from Audi to ensure light weight and a super-stiff body.

But the Lupo replacement will also form the basis of a new Skoda city car. The Czech company is planning a model to fit in its range below the Fabia, likely to resemble the Roomster show model seen at Frankfurt.

Looks good, surprisingly different interior!

The naked steel in the boot shows it's a base model (Polo has that carpeted, right? Mine does...) but the dark colors are appealing. The steering wheel looks oddly familiar... Can't remember. Lovely dials btw!

For a cheap car, it looks pretty upscale to me. :D

Thanks, Alex.

These photos are from the brazilian model.
I think the export models will have a better finishment.
Btw, the rear seat is adjustable, like Twingo´s, increasing the trunk capacity from 260 litres to 353 litres (150mm forward).
Another curiosity for Vws:

Are there buttons on the steering wheel? Hope its not something like radio control buttons that only work with special VW radios...

AAArgh. Why is the display red instead of blue??? Doesnt look like VW dials for me..

On the other hand its from southamerica, and in the past VW even produced "rebadged" VWs there that were in reality Ford i think, so I wouldnt be surprised if the clusters come from a different car...

Memm,

Yes, those buttons on the steering wheel are radio controls. The same system found in Renaults, Opels, BMWs, etc...

All the car is new, approved by the VW in Germany. Even the light switch in the steering column (new in VW´s) was approved in Germany.
I really don´t know what color the display will have in export models.
The Autolatina joint venture (ford+VW) finished in 31/12/1994 and since then there is no connections between these companies in south america.

I was just a bit shocked when I saw the red display.
Maybe because I like the blue illumination so much, and I think it would give a quite inconsistent impression to customers if the Fox'S displays are red and other VWs are blue illuminated... (Or do Southamerican VW's have a blue illumination and it's only blue in Europe?)

To be honest the Fox's instrument cluster reminds me a bit of very old French cars, don't knwo why.. But I like the outside (Espcially the front is great, the rear is not that exiting for me). It's a bit like a Mini Touran or a Mini Sharan...

All VW new models available in Brazil have blue illumination (Gol, Polo 9N, Golf IV, Passat - imported). The blue illumination, however, came here in 1998 with the Golf IV. Before this, all VWs had red illumination.
I think the blue illumination is more sophisticated and expensive - and the car is designed to be cheap. The speedometer shape reminds me those Mercedes-Benz sold in the 60s, with the vertical speed scale...

Oh, in Europe they were green... Interesting that they had different illumination in different parts of the world...

red is cheaper than blue, but the difference is not so big... especially if you think about a whole car there are some many othe rareas where they can save moeny without losing their identy... Hey in Germany they even had special TV advertising, because of their blue illumination ("Blue makes happy") You can see that they want to savemoney, e.g. there's only one center LED display, instead of two seperate ones like in the Polo, but if they are so desperate to save money they could IMHO leave out the rev meter, or have only one LED for the blinker instead of two, like in the Polo 86c (Mk 3), or leave out those radio buttons on the steering wheel... (So you see, I like the blue illumination a lot, 'cause I would sacrifice so many other things just to get the blue illumination  )

I like it too!
Looking more carefully, we can see that the illumination is indirect (the numbers are transparent), which is more expensive than a reflexive illumination with solid digits. If VW in Germany explores the blue illumination as a "trademark", it would be a big mistake launch a new car without this feature.
Another info about the instruments: like Mercedes-Benz "A" the pointers(?) disappear when the ignition is turned off.

Sorry, but I did not understand what "IMHO" stands for... and sorry about my poor english.

Nah, 'course not!

Anyway - a local auto mag said the car was already in production in Brasil, and it should go on sale in October. For export purposes, ABS, ESP and Airbags have to be added. I think they'll add some carpet to the luggage area too :D

Europe will get it in the summer of 2005 (which means modelyear 2006!).

It also said that the Gol will stop being produced with the introduction of the Fox. The Gol can finally retire...

Oh, ESP, that sounds great.. guess in 2005 its already so usual that even so small cars will get it...

VW just introduced the Gol in China this spring (March)... "Initially developed in VW's plant in Brazil, the Gol is recognized as one of the world's most successful compact cars withannual sales of 361,000 units. The price in Shanghai will be about 10000 Euros (7000 GBP)
I actually think the Gol doesnt look bad.
