Volkswagen offers the most successful compact car on the German market in the form of the Polo. A newly designed Polo saloon will complement the range of this bestseller as of mid-October (German launch).

The spacious four-door model (length: 4.18 metres) is characterised by a strikingly dynamic design. The fully galvanised body was developed independently from the B-pillar onward, and the result is a very homogeneous appearance.

At the side, the window line rises subtly towards the rear to create a more dynamic look. The roof section is characterised by the Volkswagen-typical bulge. In the area of the characteristic C-pillar, the large rear window which projects relatively far into the luggage compartment gives the car coupé-like traits.

The boot lid itself basically continues this soft, flowing line. Viewed directly from the rear, the large, horizontally structured rear lights and an elegantly styled rear cross panel dominate the design of the Polo saloon.
The rear passengers and the 432-litre luggage compartment benefit from the increase in length of 28 centimetres (!) compared to the hatchback versions. With the rear seat bench and backrest folded down, storage space of up to 1,127 litres is available.

The Polo saloon will be available in two trim versions (Basis and Comfortline) and with four different engines. The conventional 1.4-litre four-valve engine with 55 kW / 75 hp will be used in the basic version. This engine can be combined with automatic transmission as an option. Volkswagen will offer a second petrol engine in the 1.4-litre with 74 kW / 100 hp. Both engines satisfy the Euro4 exhaust emission standard and therefore enjoy tax privileges in Germany.

In addition, two diesel direct injection engines will be available: the proven 1.9 SDI with 47 kW / 64 hp and the highly innovative 1.4 TDI with pump-injector technology and 55 kW / 75 hp. The turbo diesel satisfies the D4 standard and likewise enjoys tax privileges.

Even the basic version of the new Polo saloon is well-equipped. Standard equipment includes bumpers painted in the body colour, a roof mounted aerial, green heat-reflective glass, central locking, electric windows, high-quality seat covers, vanity mirrors in the sun visors, a height and rake adjustable steering column, as well as electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering.

The high-quality and torsionally rigid body, the innovative vehicle concept and standard features such as ABS, front and side airbags (front passenger airbag can be deactivated) as well as Isofix preparations for mounting suitable child seats result in a very high standard of passive and active safety.

The Polo Saloon (sedan in Brazil) was presented here last year (oct 2002).
We have two engine options (1.6 with 101cv and 2.0 with 116cv - no diesel here) and two trim versions (basis and confortline).

Now that is nice!!

It's just like a baby Passat, all dressed up in it's chrome rubbing strips. Bless.

Nice wheels, 17s? A where did that exhaust come from?

Yes, the wheels are 17".
Nice exhaust too.

They look like Phaeton tailpipes.

Perhaps they modded them to the orginal box :)

Hmmm, not a bad idea!

(looks up the price of a Phaeton backbox! :P

German-market Sedans are built in S. Bernardo, Brasil, along with American-markets versions of the Polo (hatchback and saloon). The sedan was designed and developed in Brasil - people here have a weakness for such cars.

The best-selling Chevrolet Corsa is the sedan, but the Polo Sedan commands a USD1000 premium over an equivalent hatchback, and so Polo hatches still prevail.

The Polo's a nice little saloon though - yes, the design does work.

Nice writeup...

At 15.645€ for the 75Bhp PD TDI Comfortline, it seems a little pricey...

I wonder if they'll bring one out with a 130 PD? I think I'd have one if they did (and it wasn't stupidcrazymoney).

The Polo Sedan (branded the Polo Classic in S.A.), has been such a huge success locally, that there are now more sedans on South African roads than hatchbacks - and the hatchback had an 8 month head start! The most polupular Polo's in S.A. seem to be the 1.4TDi version, followed closely by the 1.6 Standard, then the 1.4 Basis and lastly the 1.6 Comfortline.
